Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Call (813) 495-0526 for pain relief Today

Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Call (813) 495-0526 for pain relief Today. Today's article will cover one of the biggest objections to chiropractic. Why is it necessary to go to the chiropractor for a series of visits? Why can't the doctor just fix us in one visit? The answer is that a chiropractic adjustment can put a joint back into its normal position and plane of movement, but it can not keep the joint from going out again due to muscle and ligament tightness. It is therefore necessary to re-train the joint through a series of adjustments. With each successive visit, the joint becomes slowly re-trained to hold the correct position. It is similar to how braces correct the malposition of teeth. It is not a matter of shifting the teeth back into place, but a motter of re-training the gums to hold the teeth in the corrected posistions. So, don't be too hard on your chiropractor when they suggest a series of visits. They are only doing it because they know that this course of action will lead to the best results, which will eliminate pain and will be a more permanent fix.

Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Chiropractic is the right choice!

Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Chiropractic is the right choice!
For most problems, people should choose a natural healing art as their first choice. Don't choose drugs or surgery. Go to a chiropractor. Unless you are bleeding or have a broken bone, then there should be no doubt in your mind that the choice to go to a less invasive doctor, who will seek to correct the cause of your problem by correcting irritation to your nerve, is absolutely the correct choice. Go to a chiropractor. When I get sick, which is not very frequent, the very first thing that I do is to go get adjusted. Many times, it stimulates my immune system and I feel well immediately. This does not happen all of the time, but it does happen most of the time. Even for those nasty colds and flu bouts, I make sure that I get adjusted. Joints tend to go out of alignment when things are not quite right. For example, your joints could do this when you get a new virus that may cause a cold or flu. That is why getting adjusted is so important. The adjustment acts like someone turning on the power switch. Your immune system is supposed to be able to defend you against most insults of this nature. But when your body gets run down, a strong virus can cause your joints to subluxate like a circuit breaker would flip off if it were overloaded. The chiropractor can put that joint back into place and help your body to defeat this virus by ensuring that your own immune system is on full power. So, when you get sick - Go get adjusted by a chiropractor!

Why Choose Chiropractic over Drugs?

Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Why Choose Chiropractic over Drugs?
<HEAD><TITLE>Why Choose Chiropractic over Drugs?</TITLE><META name="description" content="Chiropractic care is a better alternative to eliminate pain than drugs."><META name="keywords" content="chiropractor tampa, chiropractor, chiropractors, tampa, 33629, chiropractic tampa, chiropractic"></HEAD> Dr. Steve Edelson, chiropractor in South Tampa, has recently been asked why chiropractic care is a better alternative in his opinion than taking a drug to relieve the pain. His answer was that a chiropractic adjustment is directed at eliminating the cause of the problem, not covering it up. Drugs that are used for pain reduction, and for decreasing inflamation are ok to use in moderation, and in conjunction with chiropractic, but they do nothing to address the cause of the problem. They only mask the problem. ALso, one has to keep in mind that many drugs have side effects. The most common side effect of a chiropractic adjustment is that the pain will go away, and maximum potential for healthy bodily function will return. Doctors of chiropractic are fully trained professionals that know how to find the underlying reason for your sysmptoms. Dr. Edelson added, "In my opinion there is no better way to detect and correct the cause of the problem that creates the pain, than by going to a chiropractor." Chiropractic is the art, science and philosophy that utilizes the close relationship between joints and nerves. It is when joints become shifted, even slightly, out of their normal position that trouble begins. Normal joint motion is then affected and causes irritation to the joint itself. This can lead to degeneration of the joint - also known as arthritis. The other factor that is even more important is that when these joints become subluxated (misaligned) they irritate the nerves that are in the area. This irritation causes pain, inflamation, tingling, numbness, burning, and even malfunction. Other health issues can be caused by this type of nerve irritation. There are branches of the nerves that go to the muscles, and other branches that go to organs, glands, and elsewhere. It is not too uncommon for a patient to come in with low back pain, but also have issues with frequent urination, or constipation. Then we often see that this same individual reports having these issues improve along with having less back pain. This is true of other health issues as well. Chiropractors often work with massage therapists. Massage and chiropractic not only helps with pain, but has a positive affect upon our immune system. Dr. Edelson has two office locations. One office is in Seminole, Florida and the other is in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Edelson has helped people who suffer from headaches, neck pain, back pain, and pain to the shoulders, knees, ankles, wrists, and jaw. He has over 12 years of experience in treating injuries associated with automobile accidents. People who have been in a car accident not only have their joints thrown out of alignment, but they also tend to get torn ligaments. Whiplash injuries are particularly common, and can be quite painful. <b>Chiropractic</b> is extremely effective in dealing with these issues. Dr. Edelson also educates his patients in the importance of proper nutrition and exercise. Most people automatically think to get in touch with a medical doctor when they are hurting or if they are sick. They have been trained since youth to associate the correction of these ailments with a medical model. In fact, even the word doctor has a specific meaning for most people. When they refer to another individual who happens to have a doctorate degree, they often say that they are not a real doctor. This is what many people say to chiropractors. Guess what? Chiropractors have docarate degrees. It is true that a chiropractor is not a medical doctor and do not have an M.D. after their name. Instead they have a D.C. after their name, which means doctor of chiropractic. The doctor of chiropractic educational program happens to be very similar to what a med student would experience, up to a point. When it comes time to learn about medication and drugs, the chiropractic student learns about the art of detection and correction of the vertebral subluxation. Many chiropractors even learn about how to help other joints, such as shoulders and knees.
Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Above Down Inside Out.

Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Above Down Inside Out.
When I went to chiropractic school in Atlanta, the president and founder of the school used to tell us all the time about this saying that was first coined by B.J. Palmer, who was the son of the founder of chiropractic. The saying was 'Above Down Inside Out' and it referred to how and why chiropractic worked. The chiropractic adjustment corrects the position and motion of a joint that is subluxated (stuck in the wrong position, causing nerve irritation and malfunction). When the joint problem is corrected, the power or nerve energy then flows from above (the brain) Down (down the spinal cord and nerves) Inside Out (to the rest of the body) and this is how a chiropractic adjustment helps the body to heal. The problem originates from a nerve that is irritated. An irritated nerve can not properly supply the different parts of the body with proper information and power for proper health to continue. The result is dis-ease, pain, inflamation, and malfunction to the affected part of the body. The adjustment is as powerful as gravity, and thus the 'Above Down Inside Out' principle refers also to the speed that the effect of an adjustment takes place. Our chiropractic school president used to drop keys onto the floor to demonstrate, saying that the speed of an adjustments effect equals that of the speed of the keys that fall to the floor. Once corrected, the message from the brain, and the power and energy is restored to the body and then allows for the body to heal itself. This is where the concept of chiropractic being a non-evasive natural healing art came to be. Without the use of drugs or surgery, chiropractors merely find and correct subluxated joints, and help the body to be as it should be. When the body has no nerve interference, it generally is meant to stay healthy and defeat most viruses, and other insults to our immunb system, not to mention keep us pain free.

Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Why Choose a Chiropractor?

Chiropractor, Tampa (Dr. Steve Edelson): Why Choose a Chiropractor?
Most people automatically think to get in touch with a medical doctor when they are hurting or if they are sick. They have been trained since youth to associate the correction of these ailments with a medical model. In fact, even the word doctor has a specific meaning for most people. When they refer to another individual who happens to have a doctorate degree, they often say that they are not a real doctor. This is what many people say to chiropractors. Guess what? When it comes time to learn about medication and drugs, the chiropractic student learns about the art of detection and correction of the vertebral subluxation. Many chiropractors even learn about how to help other joints, such as shoulders and knees. So when is a good time to choose a chiropractor over an MD for your health care needs? The answer, in my opinion, is that you should always go to a chiropractor before going to an MD. Chiropractors do not advise that their patients take drugs, and they do not do surgery. Chiropractic is the least invasive and most natural way to detect and correct a health related issue. Whether you are in pain, or if you just don't feel good for an variety of reasons, going to a chiropractor is a wise choice. If your problem is not in the realm of what can be helped by chiropractic, then the chiropractor will advise you of this and refer you to a specialist or to a medical doctor. Obviously, there are situations when going to a chiropractor should not be your first choice. I would not choose to go to a chiropractor if I was bleeding, or if I had a broken bone. But for most other cases, I would go to my chiropractor first. Chiropractic care is safe, affordable, and very effective. It utilizes the bodies own healing power to help people re-gain their health. When the chiropractor gives you an adjustment, they are removing nerve irritation and re-setting your bodies proper contact between its nervous system and the rest of the body. As long as their is no interference in this communication, the body can usually heal itself. This is also the case for dealing with pain. It is usually a joint that is out of its proper alignment that irritates nerves and causes pain and inflamation.

Chiropractor, Tampa: Low Back Pain and Sciatica.

Chiropractor, Tampa: Low Back Pain and Sciatica.
Sciatica refers to pain that comes from the sciatic nerve. It is usually experienced in the legs or buttock but can also affect the feet. The origin of sciatica is from irritation to the nerve roots that exit from the lumbar spine and sacroiliac area. Occasionally it can be caused by a muscle that is pressing against the nerves. The leading cause of missing work is due to low back pain. Not only do employees suffer and miss out on income, or eat up
their sick days, but employers also suffer. Missing you valuable employees can be a huge inconvenience, leading to loss of
revenue. Then when the employee gets back to work, they are often put on light duty, which can also mean loss of revenue and
productivity. Chiropractors should always be consulted first when low back pain and sciatica occurs. Going to the medical
doctor fro this condition makes no sense as a first resort. Getting pain killers and muscle relaxers is fine, but only if the
individual is going to the chiropractor. The chiropractic physician is the only health car provider that is trained to detect and
eliminate the cause of low back pain. A vast majority of the time the cause of low back pain is a misalignment of a joint that
irritates a nerve. This condition is called a subluxation. Dr. Steve Edelson of Tampa, Florida is a chiropractic physician with 12
years of experience in treating low back pain and sciatica, and he says,"I have personally suffered from severe low back pain. I know what it is like to have this condition. This makes me more determined to find the cause of the problem and correct it for my patients. I would never suggest that people go to a medical doctor before going to a chiropractor."

Chiropractor, Tampa: When to go to your Chiropractor before your MD?

Chiropractor, Tampa: When to go to your Chiropractor before your MD?
Dr. Steve Edelson, of Tampa, Florida says, "I recommend to do the least invasive, and the most natural healing method first. That means going to your chiropractor before making the decision to go to an MD." Most people, however, are medically oriented. They would rather take a magic pill to get better. We, as a society, have been trained from a young age to think this way. The A.M.A. (american medical association) has done a fantastic job in educating the public on how to think. This way of thinking does not include any other health care, and even frowns upon them. The AMA has been trying to discredit chiropractic for years. However, every time they attempt to do so, it only strengthens chiropractic. The reason for this lays in the results that people get when they go to a chiropractor. Chiropractic works. Often times, people will come to a chiropractor as a last effort to resolving an issue. And, often times they find relief from chiropractic care, when the medical profession failed them. Let us be clear on when a visit to an MD should be the first choice. You should absolutely go to the MD if any of the following are your issues: chest pain, shortness of breath, broken bones, infections, severe cuts and lacerations, and when chiropractic does not help. For most aches and pains, go to see a chiropractor first. Many of these issues are caused by joints that are misaligned, which irritate nerves. This causes pain and can also cause malfunction in your body's health. The chiropractor can quickly and inexpensively detect and correct this problem. The result is that a majority of your health concerns will resolved from the chiropractic adjustment. Ideally, the best recommendation is to utilize both of these professions. They are there for you and are at your disposal. But, instead of taking drugs or having surgery, try to have your chiropractor restore your body's normal function by eliminating nerve irritation and correcting joint position and mobility. Dr. Edelson says, "It always amuses me to hear the drug commercials talk about how wonderful a certain drug is, and then to add that the side effects can cause cancer, heart attacks, constipation and death. People should pay more attention to the possible side effects before opting for medical treatment before choosing the natural alternative that is chiropractic."

Chiropractor, Tampa: Chiropractic Works Fast.

Chiropractor, Tampa: Chiropractic Works Fast.
Dr. Steve Edelson of Tampa, Florida has been a practicing chiropractor for twelve years. Dr. Edelson says, "Chiropractic

works fast to relieve pain, but people should not expect to be 100% better after one visit." He goes on to explain that when

most people go to see a chiropractor for help with their problem, they usually have a misaligned joint that is irritating nerves.

The correction, or chiropractic adjustment is what is used to correct the position and function of the joint, thereby eliminating

the irritation and restoring normal function. However, the thing to remember is that the joint has to be "Re-Trained" and often

times needs a series of adjustments. The best analogy is in understanding the time it takes to correct crooked teeth with

braces. A misaligned joint has ligaments, and muscles that have to be re-trained with several adjustments to achieve a long

lasting correction. There is no definite prescribed time that it takes to do this. Everyone is differetn and responds at different

paces. One has to factor in such things as age, the individuals usual recovery time for injuries, arthritis, and severity of the
injury or misalignment. The length of thime that the problem has been in existance is also a big factor when determining a
guess as to how long it will take. Usually, a majority of people will respond quickly and begin to feel better with the first few
adjustments, if not the first one alone. When the sysmptoms are gone, however, it does not mean that the problem is gone as
well. It often should be left to the chiropractor to determine if the problem is at its maximal improvement.

Chiropractor, Tampa: Headaches can come from your ears.

Chiropractor, Tampa: Headaches can come from your ears.
Dr. Steve Edelson of Tampa, Florida has been a practicing chiropractor for the past twelve years and has seen a lot of people who suffer from headaches. Traditional chiropractic adjustments work a majority of the time in eliminating headaches. Sometimes, however, it takes an unusual approach to eliminating the tough headaches. Those of you who have had them, know what I mean. it is when you have tried everything to get rid of them and your head still hurts. Dr. Edelson says, "It was quite by accident that I discovered that adjusting the ears can eliminate headaches for some people. I have since developed an analysis from the foundation of activator methods, that specifically pinpoints whether the ears can be blamed for the headache in question, and with a specific correction to eliminate the cause." This technique has since blossomed to include analysis and correction of the cranial plates of the skull. Dr. Edelson states that he has been getting much better results now that this new technique has been implemented.

Chiropractic Very Effective

Chiropractor, Tampa: Chiropractic Very Effective.
Dr. Steve Edelson of Tampa, Florida 33629 says, "In my opinion there is no better way to detect and correct the cause of the problem that creates the pain, than by going to a chiropractor." Chiropractic is the art, science and philosophy that utilizes the close relationship between joints and nerves.
Tampa, Florida 33629: Chiropractors give chiropractic adjustments

Tampa, Florida 33629: Chiropractors give chiropractic adjustments. And how does that
help you, you ask? Imagine overloading an electrical outlet in your house. A circuit
breaker would blow out and turn off - right? And you would have to go to the circuit
breaker box, find the breaker with the problem and switch it back on by pushing it
back into place. Well - that is what a chiropractor does when he find the joint that
is out of place in your spine, and adjusts it.He is putting your body's circuit
breaker back into place. It is when a joint goes out of its normal position that many problems begin, such as pain, numbness, tingling, inflamation, and malfunction in the body. Chiropractors seek to detect and correct these problems that we call
"subluxations"and thereby restore normal function to your body and allow optimal
healing. For more information, check out these web sites:

Tampa 33629 Chiropractor

Tampa, Florida 33629 has a chiropractor that is having a lot of success with gentle specific chiropractic adjustments, virtually eliminating pain. Dr. Steve Edelson has two office locations. One office is in South Tampa. For appointments, call (813) 495-0526. The other office is located in Seminole, Florida 33772. For appointments call (727) 391-0221.

"Why does chiropractic work so well? Chiropractic care seeks to restore normal physiologic function and thereby help to improve the health of the individual. COunseling patients in areas such as nutrition, proper exercise and diet, lifestyle changes and general health matters demonstrates the doctor of chiropractic's concern about the "whole person." Chiropractic adjustments attempt to restore proper spinal motion, andthereby directly influence spinal-related disorders. For more than a century, doctors of chiropractic have advocated that an optimall functioning nervous system is necessary to good health. The significance of the nervous system in health maintenance is not yet well understood or researched. As research continues to advance, answers to how the body is able to protect itself, will be better understood and able to be utilized." <em>by Louis Sportelli, D.C></em>

Dr. Steve Edelson of Tampa, Florida has been having a lot of success treating people who come to him with pain such as headaches, neck and back pain, joint pain to the extremities (hips, knees, shoulders, elbow and wrists) and in preventative health maintenance. Dr. Edelson said, "I always feel proud of the person who understands the importance of prevention. It is when they continue their chiropractic care on a maintenance basis after their pain is gone, that really sets them apart from everyone else. These are the people who will live healthier lives. These are the people who also eat right, exercise, have a positive mental and spiritual outlook on life and live to theri full potential. Taking care of your spine is part of that."

Tampa Chiropractor

Tampa, Florida is the city where Dr. Steve Edelson, Chiropractor has been practicing for almost twelve years. He is an expert in

treating whiplash injuries related to <b>automobile accidents</b> as well as other types of injuries that can be sustained in a <b>car

accident</b>. Dr. Edelson has also created his own technique for analyzing and correcting misalignments of the cranial plates. Cranial

adjusting has been around for a while and is commonly known as Cranio-Sacral Therapy. Dr. Edelson has just given a new tangent to

this effective realm of relief for people who suffer from headaches. People who have been involved in a car accident often suffer from

headaches. Sometimes they can be associated with the whiplash injury itself. Whiplash occurs primarily when your car is struck from

behind, causing an rapid acceleration-deceleration movement of your head. This not only causes misalignments in the spinal veretbra,

but often results in rips and tears in the tough ligaments and cartilaginous discs. Chiropractic is the only type of care that will realign

these joints and allow for maximal healing. Without proper re-alignment of these joints, nerves will continue to be irritated, vertebral

discs will begin the process of degeneration, known as arthritis, and associated problems and pain will continue. Dr. Edelson

recommends having a multidiscipline approach to your care, beginning with your<b>Chiropractor</b>. "Go to your medical doctor for

medication, and to your massage therapist and acupuncturist," says Dr. Edelson. But he warns, to never listen to any professional that

tells you to avoid chiropractic. Chiropractic should always be the first choice in health care because it is the least invasive and the

most natural. The doctor of chiropractic seeks out subluxations, or slight misalignments in joints that cause irritation to the associated

nerves. It is the irritation to the nerves that cause pain, inflamation, and malfunctiono in the body. Dr. Edelson will sometimes

recommend that his patient get an MRI of the injured area to determine the extent of damage. If symptoms do not improve and there

are findings of disc herniations, he recommends a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon. However, this is never in place of

chiropractic care, but in addition to it. For more information, you can call Dr. Steve Edelson at (813) 495-0526, or visit these web

Seminole Florida Chiropractor 33772

<b>Seminole</b> Florida <b>Chiropractor</b> 33772, Dr. Steve Edelson has his office at 8780 Seminole Blvd. For an appointment, call (727) 391-0221. He also has an office in South <b>Tampa</b> on Bay to Bay Blvd 33629. For an appointment at this office call (813) 495-0526. Today Dr. Edelson discusses the importance of preventative maintenance with <b>chiropractic</b> care.

Many of my patients come to me for help with a specific problem. These problems range from headaches, neck pain, back pain, tingling and numbness, shoulder pain, knee pain, hip pain, rib pain, and for injuries sustained in an <b>automobile accident</b>. I do my best to teach people about how chiropractic helps, and the importance of continuing their chiropractic caqre once they are out of pain. First of all, many problems are not fully corrected the minute that the pain and symptoms go away. Even after they have reached maximum improvement, there are benefits to coming to your chiropractor on a maintenance basis.

Do you bring your car in for an oil change every 3000 miles? Do you bring your car in for other maintenance on a regular basis? You should, if you want to avoid bigger problems with your car and if you want your car to perform at maximal efficiency. Your body wants to perform at maximal efficiency as well. Eating a well balanced diet low in fat and carbohydrates, getting proper rest and exercise, having emotional and spiritual balance in your life, and having no nerve interference are all important factors to consider when striving for a quality life with health problems. There are other factors as well, such as taking care of you teeth, not smoking or putting harmful substances into your body, and the list goes on. Taking care of your spine is probably not high on the list - but it should be on the top. Think about it for a moment. Your spine is an extension of your brain, with your nerves branching off of the spine to extend control over every function in your body. Even your blood vessels and glands that control hormone balance are controled by nerves. Having a joint out of its normal position and plane of motion can irritate the nerves that are associated with that joint. All nerves have an intimate relationship with a joint, especially the vertebral joint in your spinal column. When joints are out of alignment and nerves become irritated you may feel pain, stiffness, and discomfort. But you may feel fine also. The effect could instead be affecting your organs and your health.

How could nerves affect your health? Remember, everything is controlled by nerves. Cut the all the nerves to an organ and it dies. Irritate the nerves to an organ and soon disease starts to take hold. We live dynamic active lives and have many opportunities to insult our joints, causing them to become subluxated, or thrown out of there normal positions and motion. And so, now you know why it is important to see your chiropractor on a regular basis, to prevent this from happening. Catch the problem before it attacks your body with disease or pain. I recommend seeing your chiropractor once per month if you are feeling fine. When you have a health problem, see them three times per week! I also recomend that you include visits to other types of health professionals as well, such as your acupuncturist, massage therapist, nutritionist, and medical doctor. Never listen to advice that tells you NOT to see your chiropractor. That would be nonsense! Chiropractic is the most natural form of healing. Would you rather have your body put back into proper joint position (where it belongs) so that there is no nerve irritation and so that your health can express itself naturally? Or would you rather just take a drug to cover up your pain, leaving the cause of the problem there to cause further damage. Or would you rather get surgery? The choice is yours! I would rather go the most natural and least invasive route first! I hope that you will choose this for yourself as well.

Tampa Chiropractor Helps Automobile Accident Injuries

Auto Accident Specialist - Chiropractor in Tampa. Dr. Steve Edelson in Tampa, Florida 33629 is a chiropractor who specializes in helping people who have been injured in an Automobile accident. Research has proven that even an accident of five miles per hour can leave a person with permanent injuries. Dr. Edelson says, "I was involved in an accident many years ago and it left me with a permanent injury, so I really do know what it is like to suffer with these problems." Dr. Edelson has over 12 years of experience in dealing with the specific problems and solutions to having people get back to PRE-ACCIDENT status.

"I have seen many people who have been treated by their medical doctors, or physical therapists and still have a great deal of pain," says Dr. Edelson. He explains that getting medication or therapy to help cope with the pain that you may experience is fine, but it just covers up the symptoms instead of correcting the cause of the problem. Chiropractic adjustments do correct the cause of a majority of the pain associated with thes types of injuries. When a person is involved in an automobile accident, the injuries that result typically include having vertebral joints going out of place. When this occurs, the nerve roots become irritated and the result is pain, inflamation, and even numbess and tingling. Other issues that can result are tears to the supporting cartilage, like the vertebral disc itself. Having the joint put back into its proper position with an adjustment is the very best way for that disc to heal to its maximal potential. Disc bulges, herniations and tears are often permanent injuries, but they can be managed. The most common danger of this is that it leads to a deteriation of the disc itself, which is known as arthritis. Chiropractic can either put a stop to the advance of osteoarthritic degeneration or slow its progress to a great degree.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is experienced as pain to the wrists. But is the problem in the wrists? The answer is: sometimes yes and sometimes no. Usually carpal tunnel is instigated by overuse of the wrists that create an inflamation to the sheath of ligament that covers the nerves of the wrist, called the carpal tunnel. However, this problem can also be caused by irritation to the nerves and nerve roots at any point from where they exit the spine, to the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. At any onf these points, the nerves can be irritated by joints that are shifted out of their normal pane of movement, muscles that are inflamed or too lax, inflamation itself, and even by arthritis. Chiropractic is extremely effective in helping people who suffer from this syndrome. Chiropractic adjustments can correct subluxated joints. Cold laser therapy can activate nerve potential. Relief is likely in most cases without having to resort to surgery. People who do opt for surgery do get relief, but I believe I have seen somewhere that the statistics are not favorable, that less than 50% of these surgeries are successful.
Don't take drugs, Go to a chiropractor. Often times a chiropractor can help you get rid of your pain because he or she is getting to the cause of your problem, not just covering up the symptoms with drugs. Remember - it is NOT called Chiropractic Medicine. It is called CHIROPRACTIC!

Headaches be gone

Dr. Steve Edelson of Tampa, Florida has been offering his Chiropractic patients a different type of an adjustment to alleviate their headaches. He adjusts the skull. This type of adjustment is called cranial adjusting. The human skull is comprised of 13 bones that are joined together with sutures (puzzle like structures). Although the sutures cannot be pulled apart, the bones in the skull can be knocked out of their proper alignment. The onset of your health problem(s) may be the result of an injury to the head.
Recent microscopic research has demonstrated that nerves from the skull and spine control the immune system right down to the cellular level.
Dr. Edelson has put together a technique combining a number of disciplines for maximum results. The skilled hands of Dr. Edelson can detect misalignments in the skull very quickly. Then with 12 years of Chiropractic experience he is able to realign the bones in the skull with precision and care, using an instrument called an activator.
Anyone who has suffered a trauma to the head should be examined for skull bone misalignments. Especially if the injured person begins to experience, what may seem as, unrelated health problems after a head injury.
Anyone who has suffered a head trauma during his or her birthing process. Instrumentation such as forceps, suction, and vacuum extractors are common causes of misaligned skulls. In fact, many of the patients seen at our clinics have suffered lifelong health problems because they were never aware of their birthing trauma. Anyone who is currently afflicted with any of the health conditions listed below:

ADD, ADHD Fibromyalgia Premature Aging
Asthma Headaches Post Concussion Syndrome
Allergies Learning Difficulties Seizures
Autism Learning Disabilities Sports injuries
Chronic Fatigue Migraines
Dyslexia PDD

When a doctor can't figure out what is causing a patient's condition or why they have such a wide variety of symptoms, sometimes they conclude that you must be a hypochondriac and imagining all these symptoms. Attempts to correct the condition may then cease. This method of dismissing a patient's complaints makes the patient feel a sense of self-doubt and insecurity. If attempts to improve your health are unsuccessful, then correction of the misalignments in the skull and spine may be the missing link in your treatment program. The brain and spinal cord - the two major components of the central nervous system (CNS) - require a carefully controlled physiological environment in order to develop and function efficiently and effectively. The craniosacral system is largely responsible for providing this environment.
The craniosacral system is a physiological system that meets the criteria for classification as semi-closed and hydraulic. It has a watertight boundary largely provided by the external layer of the meninges (the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord). This external layer is known as the dura mater or dural membrane. The craniosacral system's controlled fluid inflow is provided mainly by the choroid plexuses, with controlled outflow provided largely by the arachnoid granulation system. The fluid within the craniosacral system is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which is extracted from blood by the choroid plexuses and returned to blood by the arachnoid granulation system. The extraction and resorption of CSF are accomplished largely through osmotic pressures and specialized active transport mechanisms.
The functions of the CSF are carried out as it circulates within the craniosacral system. It circulates between the cells of the brain and spinal cord, and fills the spaces between cells. CSF also crosses cell membranes to enter intracellular compartments, though entry is selective. Some components of CSF are excluded. CSF functions include:
1. Floating the brain so the effects of gravity are reduced by about 75-80 percent;
2. Serving as a shock absorber so the brain is not traumatized by striking the inner surface of the cranium during sudden movements of the head or body;
3. Providing nutrients to the brain and spinal cord, as well the pituitary and pineal glands, both of which are enclosed in the craniosacral system;
4. "Washing away" metabolic waste products and toxic substances that have been deposited within and between cells of the CNS;
5. Lubricating between cells of the CNS to prevent friction or improper contact that could short-circuit electrical nerve impulses or damage cell walls; and
6. Maintaining the proper concentrations of electrolyte substances (ions) necessary for creating and transmitting nerve impulses so we can think, remember, feel and move.
The dural membranes of the craniosacral system form the lining for several cranial (skull) bones. These membranes also attach to specific areas of bone in the spinal canal. The spinal canal attachments are much more sparse than the intracranial attachments, which allows for movement of the spine. When dural membrane movements are abnormally restricted for any reason, the craniosacral system may become compromised, with secondary effects on the CNS and/or endocrine and immune systems.
The volume of CSF in the craniosacral system constantly and rhythmically rises and falls at about six to 12 cycles per minute. This ongoing volumetric change requires dural membrane boundaries to continually adapt to avoid excessive fluid pressures on the delicate brain and spinal cord structures. Part of this accommodation is accomplished by the cranial bones opening and closing minutely where they abut each other.
It is now known that under normal circumstances cranial bones do not fuse together at puberty, as was previously taught.1-6 Rather, they are in constant motion to accommodate the changing demands placed on them by the dural membrane as it adjusts to the rhythmical rise and fall of CSF volume.
Disease, dysfunction or injuries may cause loss of bone mobility in the head, spine or pelvis. Such trauma can cause craniosacral system dysfunction, with secondary ramifications in the CNS, endocrine and immune systems.
The Role of Cranial Adjusting
Cranial Manipulation focuses on:
1. Impaired mobility of all bones related to the craniosacral system (cranium, face, vertebral column and pelvis). Sutures (joints between cranial bones) can frequently become immobilized due to traumatic jamming, surgical procedures, cranial fractures or other injuries. All craniosacral system-related bones are vulnerable to abnormal stresses and tensions imposed by attached muscles, tendons, ligaments and fasciae.
These bones may also be motion-restricted due to the immobility of bones to which they are joined by joints, etc. For example, a leg can compromise the pelvis, which in turn can affect the sacrum to which the dural membrane is attached. The result is a strain and probable functional compromise of the craniosacral system.
The therapist locates these contributing factors and restores motion wherever possible. Thus, the therapist works with total body mobility. When full mobilization is not possible, the therapist helps the client's body develop the best compensatory mechanisms, with the goal of compromising craniosacral system function as little as possible.
2. Impaired accommodative abilities of the dural membrane system. It is imperative that the dural membranes move freely in the vertebral canal, and are able to expand in the cranium. Restrictive factors include bone restrictions and abnormal tension patterns within the dural membrane itself. These are often broadcast into the cranium from ligamentous and/or muscle attachments that are excessively tight due to adhesions or cohesions formed subsequent to infections, surgical interventions, bleeding and/or toxic deposits.
3. The flow of cerebrospinal fluid and blood. The free flow of both is estimated and enhanced as much as possible by the therapist. The membranes of the craniosacral system separate blood from CSF, but it is imperative that blood flows into the choroid plexus and through the arachnoid membrane system in order for CSF to be formed, reabsorbed, and able to do its job. Many cranial techniques focus on enhancing CNS blood supply and venous drainage. There are also many techniques that aim to accomplish the best possible CSF circulation. They are all generally modified for optimal application to each individual client.
4. Body-mind integration. Since the craniosacral system has such influence on the physiological environment of the brain and the two aforementioned glands, many integrative processes between the psyche and the body emerge.
The advanced therapist is trained to assist this integrative process through the use of the hands, as well as by verbally encouraging images that may begin to surface in the client's conscious awareness during a session. The therapist may encourage the client to understand the meaning of the images to get in touch with his or her bodily functions and how he or she may be able to favorably influence them.
Cranial adjusting, just like chiropractic spinal adjusting, primarily facilitates processes that enhance the body's innate abilities for natural healing. Cranial therapy focuses on removing restrictive forces and obstacles related to the craniosacral system. Enhancing the mobility of the craniosacral system improves the circulation of both blood and CSF to the brain, spinal cord, pituitary gland, pineal gland and the cranial nerve systems, among other things.
Improving fluid motion and exchange specifically enhances the functions of the brain; spinal cord; autonomic control systems; visual, auditory, olfactory and gustatory sensory systems; motor and motor coordination systems; endocrine system; and the immune system. Less directly, it seems to affect all other body systems; therefore, it is exceptionally useful for most chronic conditions and as a preventive measure.

Chiropractic Effectiveness

Chiropractic Effectiveness

Chiropractic is now firmly established as a primary health-care profession where, according to the American Chiropractic Association, approximately 7 to 16 percent of people in the United Stated seek treatment each year. Our profession has earned recognition for its remarkable effectiveness and its focus on natural, drug-free, non-invasive methods of treatment. This section summarizes the effectiveness of chiropractic for some of the conditions we treat.

General Lower-Back Pain
Approximately 25% of our patients come to us with a chief complaint of low-back/pelvic pain or discomfort. This pain can be brought on by an accident, overuse, repetitive stress, emotional stress, or just everyday living.

Several studies have been conducted to determine the efficacy of spinal manipulation as a treatment for lower-back pain in general. One of these involved three chiropractic colleges in California, where researchers reported that "the trend for spinal manipulation to produce better results than any form of treatment to which it was compared was consistent and strong." For 86% of the outcomes, spinal manipulation was more effective than any other treatment rendered for lower-back pain.

Additional studies conducted both in and out of the United States yielded similar results, where patients reportedly recovered at a more rapid rate, had fewer relapses, and gained a new sense of confidence in their movement. Still more investigations have been conducted on the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for two sub-categories of lower-back pain: acute and chronic.

Acute Lower-Back Pain
A report published in 1994 by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research on acute low-back pain concluded that spinal adjustment is one of the most effective treatments for this condition. In another study published in 1994 by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Jefferson County (Missouri) Rehabilitation Center, it was concluded that greater and more rapid improvement occurred when treated using exercises and spinal adjustment for acute low-back pain.

A third study conducted by the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic and the University of Vermont was published in 1992. These researchers reported that spinal adjustment, when compared to other methods of treatment for acute lower-back pain (massage, corset, and TMS), proved to be a "superior," more effective treatment after three weeks of care.

Chronic Lower-Back Pain
In 1997, the Dutch Health Insurance Board funded an investigation that summarized the results of 48 separate studies on the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for chronic lower-back pain. The investigation determined that spinal adjustment is more effective than treatments suggested by general practitioners (bed rest, analgesics, and massage).

Two similar studies conducted in Canada in 1985 (University Hospital in Saskatoon) and 1991 (University of Calgary), plus a third study conducted in Poland in 1986 (Silesian Medical School), produced results similar to the Dutch investigation.

Neck Pain
Approximately 19% of our patients come to us with complaints of neck pain or discomfort. This pain can be caused by a variety of factors, such as an accident, injury, overuse, etc. The most common neck condition we address is whiplash.

The efficacy of chiropractic for neck pain has been well documented in numerous studies conducted in the United States, Canada, Wales, and the Netherlands. In a joint U.S./Canadian study published in 1996, researchers from UCLA, the West LA Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and two chiropractic colleges found that for some patients with sub-acute or chronic neck pain, spinal adjustment proved to be a more effective treatment than mobilization or physical therapy.

In a study conducted by the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto in 1997, researchers found spinal adjustments to improve neck mobility and decrease neck pain. An additional Canadian investigation published in 1997 by the University of Calgary found spinal adjustments to improve neck mobility and decrease neck pain in patients having back and/or neck complaints.

General practitioners in private practice at the Welsh National School of Medicine conducted a study of the efficacy of spinal adjustment in alleviating neck and shoulder pain. The results, published in 1983, indicated that pain and discomfort improved significantly after adjustment, as well as range of motion and flexibility of the affected areas.

A 1992 Netherlands study conducted by doctors of medicine and other professionals investigated different methods of treatment for patients with chronic back and neck pain. After 12 weeks of care, manual therapy (which consisted of adjustment and mobilization of the spine) had showed a "faster and larger improvement in physical functioning" relative to the other types of treatment such as massage, exercises, and physical therapy.

Head Pain
Headaches, both tension and migraine, are the chief complaint for approximately 13% of our patients. Before you reach for your pain-reliever of choice the next time a headache or migraine sneaks up on you, consider the following information on the efficacy of chiropractic care for head pain.

In a 1995 study conducted in Minnesota, the effectiveness of spinal adjustment relative to the administration of an antidepressant drug (amitriptyline) for patients with chronic tension-type headaches was investigated. The researchers included doctors of chiropractic, a doctor of medicine, and another professionals from Northwestern College of Chiropractic and the Pain Assessment and Rehabilitation Center, Ltd. They determined that, after four weeks of treatment, patients receiving spinal adjustment therapy experienced a continued lack of symptoms, whereas patients taking the medication returned to original, baseline conditions.

Another study, published in 1997 by doctors of medicine and doctors of chiropractic at the University of Odense and the Nordic Institute of Chiropractic and Clinical Biomechanics in Denmark, compared spinal adjustment and soft tissue therapy for the treatment of benign, chronic headaches. They found that both methods of therapy allowed for significant improvement, and there were no side effects or signs of worsening associated with either method.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
With a large percentage of the population using keyboards either at work or at home, CTS is becoming increasingly common. CTS is a condition where there is a disturbance of nerve function in the wrist. Because it is a neurological issue, we are treating more and more patients of all ages suffering from this malady.

One study, published in 1998 and conducted by researchers from the Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minnesota, compared chiropractic treatment of CTS to conservative medical treatment. The chiropractic treatment included manipulation, ultrasound treatment, and wrist supports, while the medical group received an anti-inflammatory drug (ibuprofen) and wore wrist supports. They found that both methods of treatment proved to be equally effective and recommended that patients with CTS who are sensitive to medical side effects pursue chiropractic for treatment.

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by chronic pain in the muscles and soft tissues surrounding joints, fatigue, and tenderness at specific sites in the body. While the cause is unknown, an estimated 3 million people are affected in the United States. Because we offer a conservative, hands-on approach to health care, some patients suffering from fibromyalgia are supplementing their medical care with chiropractic care.

In 1997, a study was conducted by three Canadian chiropractors on the effectiveness of chiropractic care for patients with fibromyalgia. They reported significant improvement in flexibility and reduction of pain levels and recommended that this type of treatment be included along with medical treatments for this condition.

Infantile Colic
Colic is a condition that occurs in early infancy and is characterized by episodes of loud crying, apparent abdominal pain, and irritability. Unfortunately, it is a common condition that affects approximately 10% of babies in the United States and lasts from about 2-3 weeks of age until 3-4 months. While the causes of colic are not always known or understood, parents of children exhibiting symptoms of colic are seeking help from chiropractors because of its effectiveness in reducing the severity of the symptoms.

One study that documents the efficacy of chiropractic for treating infantile colic was conducted in 1989 by a doctor of medicine and doctors of chiropractic at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Great Britain. Researchers reported that 94% of infants with colic appeared to be helped by spinal manipulation within 14 days of the start of treatment. The babies tended to have both fewer episodes of crying and shorter crying spells.

Another study, this one conducted in 1999 in Denmark, investigated two infant groups: one that was treated with spinal manipulation, and another that was treated with an over-the-counter antacid medication (dimethicone). After two weeks, the group treated with spinal manipulation exhibited a 67% drop in daily hours of crying, while the dimethicone group experienced a 38% drop.

Just a sampling

Solutions for Sciatica with Chiropractic in Tampa

Doctors of Chiropractic regularly treat sciatica. Sciatica is characterized by pain that originates in the low back or buttock that travels into one or both legs. Sciatic nerve pain varies in intensity and frequency; minimal, moderate, severe and occasional, intermittent, frequent or constant.

Pain is described as dull, achy, sharp, toothache-like, pins and needles or similar to electric shocks. Other symptoms associated with sciatica include burning, numbness and tingling sensations. Sciatica is also called radiating or referred pain, neuropathy, or neuralgia. A misconception is that sciatica is a disorder - however, sciatica is really a symptom of a disorder.

Caused by Nerve Compression
Sciatica is generally caused by irritation to the nerve roots that contribute to the sciatic nerve. Disorders known to cause sciatic nerve pain include lumbar spine subluxations (misaligned vertebral body/ies), herniated or bulging discs (slipped discs), pregnancy and childbirth, tumors, and non-spinal disorders such as diabetes, constipation, or sitting on one's back pocket wallet.

One common cause of sciatica is Piriformis Syndrome. Piriformis syndrome is named after the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle is located in the lower part of the spine, connects to the thighbone, and assists in hip rotation. The sciatic nerve runs beneath the piriformis muscle. This muscle is susceptible to injury from a slip and fall, hip arthritis, or a difference in leg length. Such situations can cause cramping and spasm to develop in the piriformis muscle, thereby pinching the sciatic nerve and causing inflammation and pain.

Sciatic nerve compression may result in the loss of feeling (sensory loss), paralysis of a single limb or group of muscles (monoplegia), and insomnia.

Proper Diagnosis
Since there are many disorders that cause sciatica, the chiropractor's first step is to determine what is causing the patient's sciatica. Forming a diagnosis involves a thoughtful review the patient's medical history, and a physical and neurological examination. Diagnostic testing includes an x-ray, MRI, CT scan and/or electrodiagnostic tests (nerve conduction velocity, electromyography). These examinations and tests help to detect possible contraindications to spinal adjustments and other chiropractic therapies.

Treatment Approach
The purpose of chiropractic treatment is to help the body's potential to heal itself. It is based on the scientific principle that restricted spinal movement leads to pain and reduced function and performance. Chiropractic care is non-invasive (non-surgical) and drug-free. The type of chiropractic therapy provided depends on the cause of the patient's sciatica. A sciatica treatment plan may include several different treatments such as ice/cold therapies, ultrasound, TENS, and MOST IMPORTANTLY - spinal adjustments.

1. Ice/Cold therapy reduces inflammation and helps to control sciatic pain.

2. Ultrasound is gentle heat created by sound waves that penetrates deep into tissues. Ultrasound increases circulation and helps to reduce muscle spasms, cramping, swelling, stiffness, and pain.

3. TENS unit (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is a small box-like, battery-powered, portable muscle stimulating machine. Variable intensities of electrical current control acute pain and reduce muscle spasms. Larger versions of the home-use TENS units are used by chiropractors, physical therapists and other rehab professionals.

4. Adjustments - At the core of chiropractic care are spinal adjustments. Adjustments free restricted movement of the spine and helps to restore misaligned vertebral bodies to their proper position in the spinal column. Spinal adjustment helps to reduce nerve irritability responsible for causing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica. Adjustments should not be painful. Spinal adjustments are proven to be safe and effective.

In college and during their training, students of chiropractic learn many different adjustment techniques enabling them to treat several types of subluxations and disorders. Techniques vary from a swift high velocity thrust to those that combine minimal force and gentle pressure. Mastery of each technique is an art that requires great skill and precision. Spinal manipulation is the treatment that differentiates chiropractic care from other medical disciplines.

To prepare a patient for adjustment, the chiropractor may instruct the patient to sit up or lie down. It is not uncommon for the chiropractor to use a totally different adjustment technique during the patient's subsequent visit. Treatment tables differ too. Some are stationary, flat padded tables and others are elaborate with electrically or manually operated head and foot rests.

Chiropractic's Limitations
Sciatica can be caused by other disorders beyond the scope of chiropractic practice. If the Doctor of Chiropractic determines the patient's disorder requires treatment by another type of doctor, then the patient is referred to another specialty. In some cases, the referring chiropractor may continue to treat the patient and co-manage the patient's care with the specialist.

Chiropractic in Tampa

A recent report from the US government states the cost of healthcare services in America will double to more than $4 trillion over the next 10 years. According to the report, for every dollar spent in 2006, 16 cents was for healthcare. This is expected to increase to around 20 cents in just 10 years. According to experts, increased spending on prescription drugs will account for much of this expected increase. We should add that chiropractic care is the largest, drug-free healthcare profession in the world and chiropractic care does not involve the use of prescription drugs. Instead, chiropractic care is based on the premise that given the right circumstances, the body is able to correct and heal itself. Chiropractors simply provide the body with the proper environment for this to occur. For more information check out these two sites:
