Reading today's headlines you could be forgiven for thinking ,"This is the end of the world"!

Yahoo seems to have the topic well covered with their news article entitled,
"Obama faces heady challenges, and they're growing (Click to read)

Concerns such as ,"a deepening recession in the U.S. and a spreading global economic crisis" and an "increasing unemployment and its ripple effects" do little to calm the mind of those about to lose their only source of income or those who, after a lifetime of toil , sweat discover that their savings, investments and such have all but disappeared overnight!.

People now- more than ever- have to look at alternative sources of income. Most will turn to the Internet to find a solution and many will give serious thought to developing a home based business. So what is a good business to start on Google?

Something to consider if starting a home based business is in your thoughts....

If you're serious about starting a home based business or just making money online the following information, whilst not intended to be alarming, should at least be enlightening. While most of us like to think we made a wise choice in the first place, this information throws new light on the topic of starting a home based business!

Study results of ways of making money online find 95% failure rate!

In their recent publication - Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Pro Consumer Guide, in their report entitled "Make Money Online Programs - Do They Really Work?" had this to say about ways of making money online which were studied,

"Around 95% of these programs failed our strict testing procedure, and thus were rated as very poor quality. Some of the characteristic features that led to poor quality gradings on all such programs include but are not limited to:

Too little information provided: Whilst the concepts and methods were presented fairly well, there was no further information of practical or instructional value. This left us a little lost.

Poor quality of information: In some cases the program merely consisted of an E-book in PDF format ranging from 50 to 80 pages with an inflated font-size to make the book appear more than what it actually is. The information was poor, confusing and the content had many spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. These were very unprofessional products. And we were surprised that such highly advertised programs could be of such low quality.

Hidden fees and huge upsells: A number of these programs did not disclose that there were further fees for the use of certain resources they offered, and many others offered an "upsell" which is offering you a higher value item at the point of purchase.

No clear privacy or refund policy: Many of the poor quality programs did not offer a clear privacy policy nor a refund policy. We attempted to get refunds for some of the extremely poor programs but were unsuccessful in most cases.

Selling of mentoring programs: Our personal information was used (or passed on to other organizations) and we received a few emails and calls in some instances attempting to sell us expensive mentoring schemes.

Poor customer support: The poor quality programs had support that was not very responsive and in some cases, non-existent. Conclusion

Our tests over a period of 12 weeks proved very disappointing for the most part. The majority of these programs were a waste of time and money, and proved next to useless in the end. With a 95% failure rate in our study it is important that people ensure they join only the highest quality programs since it is very possible to make a reasonable income online. Our tests revealed only two decent programs which showed promising results."

Now this is not an isolated, one-off report. There are many other so called -'watch-dogs' out there - the key is finding them and listeneing to what they have to say about starting a home based business because unfortuantely, most people searching for ways to make money online get hooked early in their research because they lack the know-how or aren't aware of such scams !

Another way to research what is a good business to start is to look for specific reports by people who collect information and study these companies over a long period of time (as many such programs "die" within weeks or months of their launch date).

One such book that I was referred to and found to be extremely informative was "How to select a network marketing Company" by Daren C. Falter who spent thousands of hours doing his own due diligence and research. I'm equally sure that others are available and may be found by spending a few minutes - even hours online.After all,deciding what is a good business to start is a serious staep and as such deserves good,well-balanced judgement when making a choice.

Another way to find ways of making money online is to talk to lots of people who have seen both sides of the equation. People have experienced losses through making hasty decisions, not being thorough enough and so on or simply making the wrong choice of opportuntiy for whatever reason.

Why I passed on a Golden chance!

Something occurred to me yesterday when I received an email from a friend re his new online business. he didn't mention Customers!

You see just a couple of weeks ago, when he asked me "What are you doing?" and "how's it all going?� The timing was such I decided to share my latest results.....as you do!

Of course you can guess what I received - an invitation to look at his new home business ! So I did, after all, He�s a much-respected friend and I value his commentary on such things.

Now without going into detail too much it seems to be a new "Gold Coin" program. The core attribute of the business being you buy gold coins and save them. You also recruit / refer others and go about building a home business upon Gold coins - cost per coin? Around $700 presently.

But wait a minute I thought, we're in a recession and its going to get worse - so it could make good sense. Didn't I hear that the price of Gold was going down recently? Of course, it's "bound to go back up"

Then I thought some more,� What about those MLM stats I recall from all the due diligence we always talk about when assessing such opportunities? Didn't I recall a figure something like," The average network marketer recruits 2.4 people in their lifetime of their business"! I did the numbers and I wasn't impressed.

You see my friend has (I think) overlooked a key factor which is central to the success I enjoy in the opportunity which I presented to him. Is this: BUY CUSTOMERS! Plain and simple!

Here's the secret. Can you imagine for one minute your Down line�s Gold coins talking to and referring other Gold Coins? I know that sound silly but think about it. The real power in network marketing comes from the power of referral - not the perceived value of the product.

Who amongst you would not want to have CUSTOMERS who buy and buy again and again?

Will those buying Gold Coins at $700 buy again and again? Sure, some will. However, I also remember some advice I received from a Chinese girlfriend. She said, �When the Chinese want to eat they look for a restaurant where lots of people go. They look for the 'path that others beat their door '- for that means the food must be good and of reasonable price to attract the majority of people".

So what's all this got to do with the price of Fish? Nothing- but most home businesses depend on having traffic, and 'the numbers' to sustain it.

Again I thought, �How much food could the average person BUY for $700 these days?" Answer - quite a bit � but even the price of food is going up at an alarming rate.

Question: " How many Gold coins at $700 each do you think the millions of people who've just lost their job and who�ve been living close to the 'bread line' for years will BUY?" Question:" How about you?" Have you ever lost YOUR job? Have you ever faced a recession before? I'm 66 and consider myself to be lucky that I haven't really seen a recession like the 1930's - but people say we're in for one NOW! So what to do?

Well here are my thoughts.

Ten years ago I lost everything - during a minor recession - it was 1997 - the Korean Monetary crisis. I had 'huge debt to carry and overcome.

What I did was SOME DEEP THINKING!

It went something like this..........

I haven�t got any income or savings and I haven't got this week's rent...
I can't afford to eat like I used to - must cut back....
However, I must maintain my health and fitness so I can compete for work, to earn money, to survive!

What did I do? I lived off my credit card and bought the best nutritional supplements I could buy, recommended them to others so I could earn income. I joined the local swimming pool and walked there every day to swim 1000 metres, refresh myself, relax for a few moments each day and reflect upon my progress. It was very slow - but it worked!

After ten years I paid off my debt by learning to manage debt effectively. So much so, I am now again in debt but this time I am financing a business in which I BUY CUSTOMERS - who BUY PRODUCT � for THEIR health!!

The difference between this business and the earlier one? I am making money and I am doing so in ever-increasing amounts. The company markets to, and finds the customers and acquires them - through a MAP process (Media Acquired Program). I and my Ultimate Team partner with them and buy the customers in the process. I made comment recently about the wonderful experience I once had as member of what many of my peers considered to be the Ultimate Team. It concerned a Rugby-football I was member of during high school, a team which enjoyed �over a period of four years- wonderful success resulting in an unblemished record and the envy of schools for miles around. if you're considering what is a good business to start it might be worth your time to read the following article I wrote recently.

At that time if my life, like many people my age, I realised that being member of a team was very enjoyable when winning but not so much fun when losing! I never thought that years later I would be encouraging and facilitating teams in industry - a totally different arena yet a place where teams and team behaviour was every bit the same. Nor did I think I would be involved with another Ultimate Team in my lifetime � but now, years on, I recall involvement with several such teams which exhibited similar qualities to the Ultimate Team I knew back in 1950�s

Wickipedia describes a team as being:

�comprises a group of people or animals linked in a common purpose. Teams are especially appropriate for conducting tasks that are high in complexity and have many interdependent subtasks. A group in itself does not necessarily constitute a team. Teams normally have members with complementary skills and generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows each member to maximize his or her strengths and minimize his or her weaknesses. Thus teams of sports players can form (and re-form) to practice their craft. Transport logistics executives can select teams of horses, dogs or oxen for the purpose of conveying goods.�

Theorists in business in the late 20th century popularized the concept of building teams. There was a considerable resurgence in modern business during the 1990-early 2000�s.

Some see "team" as a word that�s: overused and under-useful. Others see it as a panacea that finally realizes the human relations movement�s desire to integrate what that movement perceives as best for workers and as best for managers. Still others believe in the effectiveness of teams, but also see them as dangerous because of the potential for exploiting workers � in that team effectiveness can rely on peer -pressure and peer surveillance.

Teams may be compared also with the more structured concept of �crews� which are generally focussed around specific skills and tasks, and the advantages of formal and informal partnerships. Team members normally have different roles, like team leader and agents. Large teams can divide into sub-teams according to need. Many teams go through a life-cycle of stages, identified by Bruce Tuckman as: forming, storming, norming, and performing adjourning- more often referred to as �forming, storming, norming and performing� .The latter stage �performing� is where teams begin to reach their potential but very few ever reaching the status of becoming an Ultimate Team

Virtual Teams

Developments in communications technologies have seen the emergence of the virtual work team. A virtual team is a group of people who work interdependently and with shared purpose across space, time, and organisation boundaries using technology to communicate and collaborate.

Virtual team members can be located across a country or across the world, rarely meet face-to-face, and include members from different cultures. Many virtual teams are cross-functional and emphasise solving customer problems or generating new work processes. The United States Labour Department reported that in 2001, 19 million people worked from home online or from another location, (Pearlson & Sounders, 2001).

The team that I recently became a member of calls itself the Ultimate Team and has been born from such a structure. It�s totally Internet based with members from many parts of the world.

I imagine that most virtual teams � such as our Ultimate Team are self-managed in much the same way. Participants recognising the need to work for the common good avail themselves and their skills where they perceive them to fit best. This is a very powerful and highly motivating factor and something worth appreciating. Throughout industry and commerce it�s been my experience that teams which have been constructed by management often fail dismally for lack of motivation for the members. Often there�s a perception that management who develop teams do it for the company�s benefit whilst the team has to be satisfied with a reward system that is usually insignificant and often has a de-motivating effect. Dissention follows, teamwork suffers and performance suffers.

In a traditional management role, the manager is responsible for providing instruction, conducting communication, developing plans, giving orders, and disciplining and rewarding employees, and making decisions by virtue of his or her position. In this organizational model, the manager delegates specific responsibility and decision-making authority to the team itself, in the hope that the group will make better decisions than any individual. Neither a manager nor the team leader make independent decisions in the delegated responsibility area.

The main idea of the self-managed team is that the leader does not operate with positional authority. Decisions are typically made by consensus in successful self-managed teams and are better because of this due to the value of individuals committing themselves to achieving a solution.So it is with our Ultimate Team � perhaps even more-so because of its virtual team aspect.

In this environment, the team has to deal with time and space and geographical distances � lacking the ability to even meet each other face to face!
Imagine, joining a business venture one minute then suddenly finding yourself having to work people you don�t know, can�t see, can only communication verbally � or more often via text. On top of this, having to learn the systems � even develop the systems �as you go� , learn new skills, share hard-earned knowledge with strangers and much more.
It really is a shake-up to the normal work experiences of most people.

Yet, despite all this our Ultimate Team is achieving great results. A guiding hand from the �older� members of the team, agreed delegation � even a willingness to uplift voluntarily team -chores / duties etc. if essential.
There�s a complete abandonment (it seems) of everything we were ever taught � either during schooling or work-experience. This free-wheeling �all-for-one and one-for-all� ethic is extremely powerful � but rarely achieved in a controlled environment.
No! this team feeds itself on trust, integrity, interdependence, honesty and loyalty. That�s not to suggest that people have to toe-the line or subject themselves to formal discipline either. This Ultimate Team displays , charity, understanding, acceptance of differences, acceptance of what people can and cannot do, respects their wishes and desires, appreciates their skills and knowledge and disperses the hard-won rewards by the team evenly and with fairness. The saying �no-one gets left behind prevails� along with a sense of �Brothers in arms� you might say. Certainly in a lifetime of experiences I cannot recall another example where so much is being accomplished by such diverse individuals in such a harmonious way. Given too that membership of the Ultimate Team is growing by the day, like the human cell � ever growing, ever changing, this result is even more remarkable given the limitations placed upon it.

So how is all this achieved? What enables the Ultimate Team to operate so well with the noticeable absence of what many consider to be the modern tools of management ?

The answer to that is quite simply, a common goal, prolific discussion and communication via the internet chat systems, dedication to purpose, blind-faith and trust in other members of the team a a strong unfailing belief that above all else God�s hand is at work!
