As a fingerprint technician I, Ken Edelstein am frequently asked to fingerprint people, generally for immigration or licenses, who literally have no fingerprints whatsoever. The causes are legion. Some are taking medication that has the effect of removing their fingerprints. Others, thru their professional activities have worn away all traces of their natural fingerprints. Some of the occupations include: medical workers who wash their hands literally dozens of times a day, guitar players not using a pick and rubbing their ridges off with each tune, sailors working with ropes, and artists working with paints and paint thinners who clean up by just wiping their hands on their aprons.

Fingerprinting is more of an art than a science, whereby the analysis of the fingerprints is the reverse. Proper fingerprint techniques can enhance shallow ridges, or faint fingerprints. All the basics must be carefully observed including: a cool room, proper lighting, proper fingerprint station height, use of ink & roller with a very thin ink layer, and a careful briefing of the subject as to the proper procedures. Additionally proper hand washing and application of fingerprint ridge raiser chemicals can help - when there is something to work with......

But, sometimes there is just nothing - nada, not a trace of a friction ridge. The fingertips are sometimes as smooth as glass; more like a marble than a human fingertip. How then can these people be accepted by the FBI database by submitting classifiable fingerprint cards? The answer is they can't. But, that is not the end of the story. Just because someone does not have fingerprints that can be classified in the standard procedure does not inhibit them from their employment goals, licensing requirements or opportunity for immigration or adoption.

For the fingerprintless among us there is a procedure for clearance. It's a bit lengthy and tedious, but eventually succeeds. The procedure is to submit standard, best efforts, fingerprint cards three times; and probably receive each time a rejection due to poor print quality. How can I tell if the Notary is authentic and reliable?

It is rare for someone to impersonate a notary. Most reputable rubber stamp and embosser shops require the notary ID card for them to process an order. However, there are now walk-in facilities that will take any image and turn it into a rubber stamp - without a glance! Your first line of defense is to ask to see the notary ID card - issued by the Department of State. It has the name of the notary and the expiration date of their current commission. In New York State a notary commission is for four years. The notary ID card does not have a picture - ask to see photo ID - compare the name on the notary ID card to the photo ID.

There is a wide range in the quality of notary service. At one extreme is the totally incompetent notary who just stamps and initials your document. Ken Edelstein is at the other end of the spectrum. I take each assignment personally, doing the best job possible. Many times I spend a long time explaining procedures and giving advice - with the knowledge that the discussion will not lead to me earning a fee. Do you need notarization, apostille or legalization?

I am often asked if a document needs to be notarized; an apostille affixed or should be Embassy/Consulate legalized. Not being an attorney, I can not give legal advice. But, I can say the answer is: it depends on the requirements of the person or organization receiving the document. They have their requirements - it is those requirements that determine what processing the document must receive.

It is rare for documents originating in the US and to be used in the US to require an apostille or legalization. Those processes are generally for documents that originate in the US and are destined to be used in a different country. But, ever there; there are exceptions to the general rule. I have had cases where a locally used document required an apostille on the chance that it might be used in evidence in a foreign court!

In New York State even the notarization procedure has an option. After the notary affixes their seal and stamp; an additional step, authentication of the notary signature can be requested. Usually this additional step is part of the apostille or legalization procedure. However, I have often been requested to provide authenticated notarizations for documents to be used in court. It's a "best practice" for the notary to always emboss documents when they affix their rubber stamp "seal." The embossing is proof positive that the document is the original.

The Notary Service "Puffer" Fish

The puffer fish is a small fish. However, the puffer is a sly fish and manages to be rarely eaten by slightly larger fish. It inflates itself with water - to appear to be a bigger fish! In a similar manner, some notary services think you want to deal with a gigantic entity to have a document notarized. I don't understand the logic. Notarization, especially a mobile service that goes to your location - deploys a single agent. What is the benefit of a massive or fictitious organization - when you have an appointment to meet with one person, the notary?

Living in the heart of New York City, Manhattan, http://kenneth-a-edelstein.com - I have had the pleasure of notarizing documents for many "VIPs" or Very Important People. I provide my signature "Key Client Services" to everyone - VIP or not. However, sometimes providing service to a VIP can be a bit of a challenge. Drawing on my degree in Psychology helps - not to manipulate - but to help my clients feel at ease. My background skills help me to understand what not to do, and how to make sure the process goes smoothly - resulting in a perfectly notarized document.

Sometimes the challenge is not being able to speak directly to the client. VIPs often have "front end" assistants. Sometimes the assistant, personal secretary or nurse informs me that: "I sign everything for my employer". Sorry, but not this time, I gently inform the helpful but not authorized employee. I must meet face to face with the person whose signature I will be notarizing - there is never an exception. No email, no FAX, no teleconferencing, (I actually have been asked to notarize that way several times), and certainly not by phone. The employee of the VIP can arrange the appointment, check the calendar, but not sign the document.

Just today I was in the office of a prestigious New York physician - the doctor was to sign off on the health of my clients for an adoption. I prepared the notary sections on various documents, but I did not sign them - I always sign last - after the ID is checked. I asked the doctor to see his driver's license. He was a bit amused, not angry or uncooperative - just amused. "We are in my office, my many degrees are on the wall, my patients (who arranged for my visit) are here - "why would you ask me for my driver's license" - he asked with a polite smile - obviously surprised at my request.

Almost anything can be notarized, with a few key exceptions. Perhaps the most common reason the notary declines to notarize is a lack of proper ID. Most notaries will require "government issued photo ID", however the legal requirement varies from state to state. In New York State the code does not specify what the notary must see; and each notary establishes their own standard for ID. Non Photo ID is never acceptable. A photo ID from "Freddie's Gym" will probably not be accepted; whereas a work ID - might.

A notary must make "face to face" contact to verify ID. It is illegal to notarize via Fax or verify ID on the basis of a telephone call. The wording of the document determines if the notary is required to actually witness the signing of the document.

If the wording is "sworn to and subscribed" then the notary is required to see the signature take place. If already signed - it can be signed again to meet the requirement. If the wording is "this instrument was acknowledged before me" - then the notary is only required to check the ID.

Official records, Birth, Marriage, Divorce, Death Certificates, and some others are not generally notarized by a notary public. The equivalent of a notarization is provided by the certification by the issuing authority. A common problem is clients wanting a photocopy of an official record to be notarized. That procedure is always improper as the signature of the official (who is not present) would need to be notarized, not the holder of the document. It's a good idea to order more than one copy when dealing with official (vital) records. A photocopy of a notarized document, or of a "official record" is not considered to be notarized or official.

Notarization can be performed on a very wide variety of "documents". If you catch a very large fish, and write "I caught this fish", along with your name and the date; I can notarize your fish! It's your college degree or transcript and you have been asked by your employer to provide a notarized copy or perhaps an Apostille.. It sounds simple, but there are a few things for you to consider, and some decisions for you to make. The simplest procedure is for you to write a statement that the document is yours, and have your signature on the statement notarized.

Alternatively, you can have a notary go to the school, obtain a letter from the registrar that the attached copy is authentic, and have the signature of the registrar notarized. Both procedures involve the notarization of a signature, but the first is your signature; the second is the signature of the registrar.

The first procedure, the notarization of your signature is the valid, but, does not constitute notarization of the degree or transcript. It might be acceptable; but that determination can only be made by the person or institution where you submit the documents.

You can even have http://kenneth-a-edelstein.com obtain an apostille on the document, but it will be an apostille of your signature (on the statement); it will not be an apostille of the underlying document. This procedure often works; it depends on the recipient.

The alternative involves more work. A notary must go to the educational institution, meet with the registrar, obtain a letter stating the attached document (degree or transcript) is valid; and notarize the signature on that letter - that refers to the document. With this procedure the document itself has been notarized and is far more acceptable, compared to your statement of the documents validity. The letter from the registrar should be on official school stationary and the title of the person signing should be on the letter. They must be an official of the school, authorized to make a statement as to the validity of the attached document. Ideally the letter describes the attached document in detail, the signature must me handwritten not imprinted or a stamp.

Educational documents are among the most difficult to process for Apostille or Embassy/Consulate Legalization. The difficult part is arranging for the notary to meet with the proper school official. I have successfully processed many educational documents, generally for use overseas - with Apostille / Legalization. As a New York Mobile Notary Public, I am often called upon to notarize a single Power of Attorney document. I always advise my clients to prepare multiple copies of the form prior to my arrival. The Power of Attorney basically allows someone else to sign your name on a legal document. You can specify exactly what the "powers" are granted. For example you can restrict your "Attorney in Fact" - the term used for the one who is granted the "power" - to signing the papers for the purchase of a house. The "Attorney in Fact" need not be an actual attorney - you can grant the authority to anyone.

The Power of Attorney (POA) document, when "unrestricted" conveys very broad powers indeed. Careful thought should be given to both what powers are granted, and the character of your representative. An unrestricted POA could be used to "sign you into" a mental institution! Remember you are granting authority to "sign your name." As this is such a profound document; and that someone else is legally signing your name, the POA is often kept upon use. For example: If you grant me the authority to go to your safe deposit box, the bank will retain the POA for their records. The bank will want to keep the original POA to substantiate that your access to the box was duly authorized.

Thus the POA is not a "show and go;" but rather a "surrender upon use" document. That is the reason several copies (each duly notarized), are most generally required. A Xerox copy of a notarized document is NOT a notarized document. To manage the affairs of someone might require over a dozen POA's. Original POA's will be required by each bank, brokerage account, credit card account, etc. It is vital that the notarizations on each POA be preformed without the slightest flaw. Why would I want a Mobile Notary to come to me?

There are many reasons to use a Mobile Notary. Perhaps the most important one is that the mobile notary is dedicated to the notary profession, a specialist. Of course you can go to the bank and use their notary, hoping they are up to date on current laws, have the proper insurance coverage, and have a supply of notarization forms for when the requisite notary wording is missing, etc.

Banks also tend to be very selective about what they are willing to notarize, sometimes requiring you have an account with the bank.

Many times we are called to notarize when several people must sign the same document and all of the signatures are to be notarized, as in the case of a will. It would be very difficult for a group to "walk around" trying to find a notary! It is far more practical, considering the witness's time, to have Ken Edelstein appear on schedule.

Sometimes the affiant cannot get to a notary. Obvious examples are hospital and senior citizen situations. The Case of the Mysterious Notary

I note with amusement the recent growth of "phantom" Notary Service web sites. No names, no home addresses, often just a cell phone number, and a machine/"dispatcher" that says "someone will get back to you". That's my home address on my site and the 212 number is my home phone. I am also National Notary Association "Background Checked" and a 123notary.com "Elite" Certified Signing Agent.

When we meet the first thing I do, prior to asking for your ID is to show you mine. I have my NY State Drivers License, my Notary Commission, and my EPA Federal Lead Based Paint Inspector "badge" (with photo).

The sites that boast of "Accreditations" are really referring to (sometimes) paid memberships. Real accreditations are earned, not bought. I am a member of both the BBB and the Local Chamber of Commerce - with clickable links to my listing on their sites. Be wary of accreditations in a "Company Name", people take tests, not organizations. Who are the (unlikely) 6+ staff members, what are their names? How much experience does each have, you might get the "runt" of the litter who just started!

If a "Company" does not give any names on their site, and you wish to know who really is the company? Ask for a copy of the "Certificate of Doing Business Under an Assumed Name, if they don't do business under a genuine human name. Most of all, be wary of "false New Yorkers", operating under a "New York sounding name". Many don't live in New York City; some don't even live in New York State! Always ask, and verify where the Notary lives. An out of New York state resident notary will probably be unwilling or unable to respond quickly from their distant home location, if at all. Also, many notaries "part time"; attempting to "squeeze you in" around their 9 to 5 NYC jobs; but their priority is, of course; their other job - not you! They don't put their names on their web sites so their "main job" boss won't know about their "other" activities. My point is that you should ask questions about "facts" stated - not just on Notary sites - but in any advertising. How to tell if you should "pass" on a Notary Web site, and select a different one

There are many notary web sites to choose from. Some are better than others. Selecting a notary is not much different from selecting any other service. With the assumption that the notarization that you see is important and you want it done correctly the first time: Spend some time reading a few pages on the site; even look at some topics that you are not interested in. Look for inconsistencies; do they claim to be in business 5 years on one page and 7 on another?

Accreditations are commonly listed on many sites. The most valid accreditations are "clickable links" that go "off site" to the referenced site; ideally showing the notary's profile and history. Flat, non-clickable images are often just a copy and paste - without even obtaining permission for use, or any real membership involved. Look for Better Business Bureau or Chamber of Commerce membership. An accreditation from an organization you never heard of should be given little weight in your selection process.

Your budget return flight will be missed as you wait for the legal process to grind along. Perhaps the buyer will be unavailable for a planned session. The "go there and do it yourself" option will most likely take much more time and expense than planned.

There is a better option. Hire an attorney based in Naples. Give your Italian attorney a limited Power of Attorney granting the right to sign your name on all documents necessary for the property transfer. Your attorney will need you to provide the Power of Attorney with the (usually) internationally recognized Apostille, attesting to your signature. You obtain, from your Italian attorney the locally approved, in this case Naples; Power of Attorney form; it can be emailed to you; and forwarded to me for printing on legal size paper if necessary. You sign it in my presence, and I obtain the Apostille; which is added to the document. The document now has the legal status as if you flew to Naples and signed the Power of Attorney in Italy.

Thus the Apostille bearing document has the status of having a notarization that has near worldwide acceptance. I say "near" because there are a few countries that do not honor the Apostille - but the vast majority of nations do.

There is no need to fly to Naples to give your attorney a locally acceptable Power of Attorney. My Mobile Notary service will print as many copies as required (be sure to inquire how many your processing will require,) bring them to your home or office; and notarize your signature for each copy. After that, I will go thru the processing steps to obtain the Apostille, usually the next day after you sign for each required copy. Note that a Xerox copy of a notarized document is not itself a notarized document. Not only will the copy lack a raised seal; it also lacks your original signature. It is impossible to obtain an Apostille for a Xerox copy - each must have an original signature and notarization.

Selecting a Fingerprinting Service

The two basic techniques of taking fingerprints.

Traditional Ink and Paper - This is by far the most common and acceptable method for taking fingerprints. Accepted almost everywhere, this method has been the standard for decades. Print quality determined by the skill of the technician. Requires ink on fingers, but modern wipes remove all traces of the ink. Instant results, completed card can be shipped immediately.
Live Scan - A new technology with very limited acceptance. Tremendous "start up" costs. The machine cost about ten thousand dollars and leases for over six hundred a month, with the costs passed on to clients. A Mobile Scanning machine does not produce "hardcopy" fingerprint card, but, on request, card can be printed and delivered, at additional cost, at a later date. If they have a printer.

How to check out a Fingerprinting Service

Referrals are a start, but it's safe to assume you will only be referred to positive references.
A guarantee should allow for you to choose: money back or redo - sometimes you might not want the same "reject" source to try again - insist on a money back option if prints are rejected.
Is the business a Member in Good Standing of Better Business Bureau? Chamber of Commerce?
Does the company publish a name, address and contact number for the "top man?" Do they name the technical staff? If not, ask why not. Ask if they will respond to an emergency after hours.
Do they limit you to "office hours" at their distant location, or will they go to your location anytime?
Don't be impressed by a company location or equipment - fingerprinting success (ink or scan) depends on the skill of the technician. You should interview the technician and use your instincts.

My thoughts on Live Scan Fingerprinting Technology

I investigated the current "Guardian" as well as the older and somewhat obsolete "ID-500" (it cannot do "flat four" rapid scanning and relies heavily on the skill of the operator to roll the fingers - exactly the same as ink and paper). I determined they are best suited to a single location, sending always to the same place. The problem is that the scanning machines are limited to sending to a single destination. For example, if I purchased a "Guardian" and registered it for FINRA (brokerage use); I could not use it to send to anywhere else. But, if I carry along a computer, than the scanner could be reconfigured to send to a different location. However, the manufacturer told me that a separate PC is really required for each location that prints will be sent to! To make things worse, only FBI certified printers are allowed to print standard cards from the scanned images. Thus, to provide the same flexibility I now have with card and ink, I would need a scanner, several laptops, and a FBI approved printer. Way too much complexity for me. And, I might add in passing that I am truly a computer expert, having done PC support since the Apple was first introduced! It does make sense for XYZ Brokerage to have it to register brokers with FINRA - the brokerage clearinghouse - one machine - one target destination is when the "Live Scan" solution seems most practical.

For general purpose work, Immigration, Clearances, Licensing, Adoptions, etc - Ink, card, and a skilled technician seems the most practical approach for the time being. That will probably change, but not anytime soon. Phony Apostille Services - How to Spot Them

Sometimes an Apostille can be issued without your signature. One example is a Birth Certificate issued by the City of New York. If you need your New York City Birth Certificate used overseas, chances are that an Apostille affixed to it will be required. As the City is the issuer of the document; it's their "signature" that applies, not yours. Therefore, you do not sign anything - the Birth Certificate - with letter of exemplification, forms the basis of receiving the Apostille.

Except for the above example, and similar governmental issued documents, your signature is the basis for the Apostille. Your signature will require notarization, and that notarization must be perfect. All notarizations require personal presence with the notary. That is the flaw in Apostille by Mail services. They issue the notarization of your signed document without actually checking your identification and meeting with you. Such activity is, of course, illegal. If the notarization is illegal, the Apostille issued for that notarization is also void; the same as the fraudulent notarization.

An Apostille is the additional verification of the notarization, which is verification of the original signature. As in any field of endeavor, there are those willing to "take shortcuts." They collect their fee and issue what looks genuine; but has been obtained thru fraud. As an Apostille is almost always used for an important document; would you want to risk your document being nullified when the fraud is discovered?

There is no legal notarization of your signature via mail, email, phone or Fax. Personal appearance with the notary, checking of ID, and administering the notary oath is always required to legally notarize your signature. Your Apostille bearing document is probably very important to you; do not allow an unscrupulous service to involve you in fraudulent activities.

Do you need notarization, apostille or legalization?

I am often asked if a document needs to be notarized; an apostille affixed or should be Embassy/Consulate legalized. Not being an attorney, I can not give legal advice. But, I can say the answer is: it depends on the requirements of the person or organization receiving the document. They have their requirements - it is those requirements that determine what processing the document must receive.

It is rare for documents originating in the US and to be used in the US to require an apostille or legalization. Those processes are generally for documents that originate in the US and are destined to be used in a different country. But, ever there; there are exceptions to the general rule. I have had cases where a locally used document required an apostille on the chance that it might be used in evidence in a foreign court!

In New York State even the notarization procedure has an option. After the notary affixes their seal and stamp; an additional step, authentication of the notary signature can be requested. Usually this additional step is part of the apostille or legalization procedure. However, I have often been requested to provide authenticated notarizations for documents to be used in court. It's a "best practice" for the notary to always emboss documents when they affix their rubber stamp seal. The embossing is proof positive that the document is the original.

Should your Notary use a LOOSE Acknowledgement?

Most forms I notarize have a notary section with the standard notary wording in place. Some, however, are missing the required notarial wording. New York State, for example, requires the location where the notarization was performed, the date, a statement by the notary, etc. The most common notary statement is "This instrument was acknowledged before me by." If the requisite wording is missing it is the responsibility of the notary to add it to the document.

There are two primary ways for the notary to add the wording. The most common is to staple a form, the loose acknowledgement directly to the document. However, if the document is to be sent via FAX the stapled addition presents a problem. An alternative is to have the notary either write the wording directly on the document (sloppy), or use an acknowledgement stamp that contains the proper wording. The stamp is much neater, gives a more presentable appearance and does not rely on notary memory for completeness. Not every notary carries this often needed stamp. If your documents do not have notary wording and there is a possibility they will be faxed, be sure your notary has this essential tool.

The worst option is for the notary to ignore the requisite wording and merely rubber stamp the notary seal, and sign below it. That is very poor notary practice and really not a valid notarization. The use of the loose acknowledgement stamp is generally preferred - if there is room at the bottom of the page for both the wording stamp and the notary stamp. Experienced notaries usually carry two notary stamps - same content - but different sizes to fit the available space. A really good notary will have two embossers for the same reason.

It is important that you check the work of the notary to be sure all the requirements for notarization are on your signed document. The Venue (State of.... County of....), your name neatly printed, the notary statement, and the notary signature. The signature of the notary must exactly match the notary name as on the notary rubber stamp. An improperly executed notarization is worse than none at all. At a glance it looks good, but to the trained eye (after a bit of reading on my site), the omissions are obvious. Many states, including New York, permit Loan Packages (initial purchase, refi, reverse mortgages, etc.) to be processed at your home or office. You do not need to go to the bank or title company office. This becomes very convenient when both husband and wife will be signing. A specially trained notary called a Signing Agent can be dispatched to meet with you at a location and time of your choosing. The Signing Agent will bring two complete sets of printed documents. One will be signed and notarized at your location; the other will be a copy for your records. The Signing Agent will guide you, step by step, thru the signing; notarize and ship the documents. The Signing Agent fee is normally considered a Title Company expense; you don't pay extra for this service.

The procedure is often called a closing, however it is only the first step in the closing process. But, it is a vital step and must be completed perfectly. A single flaw, missing signature, or botched notarization can put the entire process on hold - until the error has been corrected. An important aspect is the Right of Recession, most commonly known as the Right to Cancel. It allows three business days to review the borrower copy, resolve issues; and if necessary cancel the transaction.

The Right of Recession only applies if the collateral for the mortgage is a primary residence. In other words, if the property is a second home - there is no Right to Cancel. One suggestion: as an alternative to having the Signing Agent bring the documents to your home; you can request the entire Loan Package be sent directly to you. This will give you plenty of time to review the complete package with your Loan Officer - prior to the arrival of the Notary Signing Agent. This is especially important if you will not be receiving a Right of Recession.

Another tip: After the Signing Agent has departed; number your copy of the loan package (it's not the legal copy, so feel free to write on it). Typically, the package is about 100 pages. Next, with a pad of paper alongside - go thru your package page by page. When you have a question; for example the Escrow Amount on page 34 - circle the item in question directly on page 34 of the Loan Package. Next, on your pad of paper write the number 34 and the issue: Escrow amount too low. Proceed thru the entire document, noting all issues and questions. When you are done, the pad will be a directory to issues in the Loan Package, with page numbers and reference to the issue. The Loan Documents will have the appropriate area circled. Free Legal Advice - Do you need a Notary or an Attorney?

I often get calls asking me to assist in the "preparation" of legal documents. "Just tell me what it needs to say," is the most common request. Being a New York State notary; I am bound by the NY Notary Laws. An excerpt follows: May not give advice on the law. The notary may not draw any kind of legal papers, such as wills, deeds, bills of sale, mortgages, chattel mortgages, contracts, leases, offers, options, incorporation papers, releases, mechanics liens, power of attorney, complaints and all legal pleadings, papers in summary proceedings to evict a tenant, or in bankruptcy, affidavits, or any papers which our courts have said are legal documents or papers.

The real function of the Notary is to verify the identification of persons signing legal documents under oath. In New York State, and most other jurisdictions; notaries are forbidden to create documents or give legal advice. Being a notary and knowing my state's Notary Law; allows me to perform the notarization process. I can make certain that the notarization meets all legal requirements.

For example: it is recommended that the embosser always be used for documents destined for processing outside of NY State. As a matter of procedure I emboss all notarizations routinely.It's a real temptation to help my clients draft what appears to be a simple document. But I must decline, no matter how "trivial."

Lawyers have the license and skills for legal document preparation, not notaries. The same applies to "legal advice." "Should I sign this," is another common question that I am forbidden to answer. However, there are some questions that a skilled notary can answer. "Where in this set of mortgage documents can I find the interest rate?" It's truly a fine line between that permitted assistance and "explaining the documents."

How to be the world's WORST Notary / Signing Agent

Never write things down - rely on your good memory. Book EVERY call that you get and go to the one that pays the most. Use the same stamp for life - after you cut off the "99" from the date then cut off the "19" and just write in the 2000 year. Never clean your stamp. Dress shabby - looking poor might get you a tip. Arrive late - they will appreciate you more when you finally show. Ignore all rules - backdate, fax notarizations, loan out your stamp and seal when you are on vacation - for a commission of course. Curse out the loan officer when the docs are late or over 50 pages. Shrink all e-docs to cheaper letter paper - legal paper costs too much anyway. Ship completed signings only on Saturday - it's easier to find parking.

Bait and Switch all "signing companies" demanding double the agreed fee - save this demand till an hour before scheduled time. Eat lots of beans and garlic - borrowers sign quickly in a flatulent environment. Charge extra for using your embosser - after all it's extra work. Never renew your commission - just update the stamp. Never check ID - nobody really gives a hoot who signed it as long as it's not blank. Retain the signature page of the mortgage till the title company pays you. If your check doesn't arrive promptly, sue the borrower - after all it's their signatures you notarized. Pirate other notaries web sites - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Send phony invoices to lots of Title Companies and signing agencies - collect what they did not pay other notaries.

You're entitled to give opinions about the interest rate and any aspect of the loan - be colorful in your comments.

Bring your lunch to the job - it shows you have good time management skills. Have the affiant sign in day glow green ink - legal docs need a bit of color. Always tell the borrower what you think they want to hear - promise anything to get them to sign quicker.

Put your stamp in the MIDDLE of the page - show them who's important. Never give the borrower a copy - most can't or won't read it anyway - and paper is expensive. Make a copy of the return FedEx/UPS airbill and use it to send your invoice if not paid in one week. When the borrower's apartment/home is a DUMP - it's OK to tell them so. Park on the borrower's lawn so you won't be blocked in on their driveway. Any room without a No Smoking sign is your invitation to light up. If the borrower forgot to make a copy of their drivers' license just slip the original into the package when they are not looking. Make any changes to the documents that will get the borrower to sign - after all you are a public official with authority. A few drinks can help steady your hand. Off color, sexist and racist jokes show self confidence and professional ability. Never read signing instructions - who are they to boss you around? Keep phone charges down by calling the borrower collect. Learn to shortchange - clients usually have their mind on the documents. Never go alone - bring friends to help create a festive environment. Answer all "legal" questions with your best guess - it makes you appear very wise and lets you bill the borrower directly for your legal opinions. Sometimes you don't have to Sign the Document before the Notary.

While it's generally a good rule to not sign a document to be notarized until the notary is present; sometimes you can! It all depends on what the notary, (not you) will be saying. At the end of your document there is a "notary section" - it generally starts with "State of: and County of:. In the notary's statement (which is signed by the notary); most commonly are one of two key phrases. It is these phrases that determine if you can lawfully sign the document prior to the notarys arrival.

The first format "sworn to and subscribed before me"; has the keyword "subscribed" - this requires the notary to actually witness the signing process. No exceptions. All notarizations are "sworn to" - as a good notary will give the "oath" as part of the notarization process. But "subscribed" allows no leeway. You must wait for the notary to be present to witness your signature. What if you already signed? Most commonly the notary will simply ask you to sign again near the first signature. Some will request you to draw a single line thru the prior signature and initial the end of the line; a legal erasure.

However, if it says "this instrument was acknowledged before me" than the notary is only required to ask you if you did indeed sign the document! When you say "yes" you are acknowledging that you did do the relevant signature. Some notaries are not comfortable with this process, but it is "the letter of the law". In either case above, as in any notarization; there is always the requirement for "face to face" contact with the notary. It is always illegal to notarize by Fax or phone. The notary always has the responsibility of checking your ID prior to completing the notarization. I often hear that the procedure is "difficult" - due to the ID checking and the face to face contact requirement. Please understand that the procedures are designed to protect you from someone impersonating you. Notaries must check your ID in person to verify your identity. Most times a government issued photo ID is required; a social security card does not have a picture and will rarely be accepted unless other identification is presented. "It's notarized, so it must be valid", is a common misconception about notarizations. What must be understood is the distinction between the content of a document and the signature on the document. Notarization verifies the identity of the affiant, the one who is stating that the document is true. What notarization does not do is make the content true, valid or reliable. A false notarized document is just that: a false notarized document.

It is not the function of the notary to read the document - at all. The responsibility of the notary is to check the identification of the person making the statement. The only part of the document that is "validated" by the notary is the signature! While it is poor notary practice to notarize a document known to be false, the notary has no requirement to read the entire document. For example: If, in the middle of a lengthy affidavit, the affiant includes the statement "I had dinner with Elvis on April 1st, 2008" - the notary would probably not notice the false claim. The document would be routinely notarized. The notarization certainly does not make the statement credible!

While notarization does not make a false statement valid, it does subject the affiant to criminal penalties. When you knowingly sign a false statement, and have it notarized, the crime is perjury, not something to take lightly. False statements on notarized documents are legally the same as false statements made in court under oath. Often it is a legal requirement for a document to be notarized. Without the notarization the document may be unacceptable, as when a Mortgage needs to be recorded with the county clerk's office. A flawed notarization is the same as no notarization at all. The county officials are very familiar with the legal requirements for a notarization and will reject on sight a flawed document. If the mortgage, for example, can't be recorded; the entire transaction is in peril

The most common "Junk Notarization" is when the notary only stamps and signs the document. This is not a legal notarization. Notaries are required to "make a statement", eg: "sworn to before me on mm/dd/yy by "affiant name"". Also the "venue" or where the notarization took place is required. That is the reason the "State of New York" and "County of Richmond", for example; appears at the start of a notarization. The notary is also required to give the affiant an oath, asking if the document is truthful and if they signed, and understood the document.

Sometimes a "Junk Notarization" can be fixed by returning it to the Notary of Record who did the initial notarization and have them add the missing components. The terms keyword is often used as shorthand for keyword phrase. When we use the term keyword, we mean the word—or words—that may be typed into a search engine by someone carrying out a search. In fact most searches these days are not single-word searches … most searchers now type two or more words in their searches.

If you’re reading this, you probably already understand why you need to know the keywords people use when searching for products or services such as those promoted by your Web site. Just in case …

• If you don’t know the keywords, you can’t optimize your Web site properly.
• If you don’t know the keywords, you don’t know what keywords to put in links pointing to your site.
• If you don’t know the keywords, you don’t know which keywords to bid on in Pay Per Click programs.

Submitting to the Open Directory Project:

Yes, the Open Directory Project is free, and yes, you can submit much more quickly. But the problem is there's no guarantee that your site will be listed. I've seen sites get into the Open Directory Project within a week or two of submission, and I've seen others that waited months without ever getting in. In addition, the submission forms sometimes don't seem to work! But don't give up. As I mentioned earlier on that, the Open Directory Project is very important. Here's how to submit:

1. Read the editor's guidelines at dmoz.org/guidelines/describing. html. If you know what guidelines the editors use, you may be able to avoid problems. It's hard to get into the directory, so you might as well give yourself the best chance of getting in.

2. Go to www.dmoz.org. The Open Directory Project home page appears.

3. Find a suitable category for your site.

4. Click the Suggest URL link at the top of the page.

5. Follow the (fairly simple) directions. Submitting to the Open Directory Project is much easier than doing so to Yahoo! Directory.

You simply enter your home page's URL, a short title, a 25-30- word description for the site, and your e-mail address. That's it. Then you wait.

But understand that the editors at DMOZ don't care about your site, they care about the directory; in fact, read the DMOZ forums at www.resource-zone. com and you'll find that the attitude tends to be "tells us about your site, then go away and forget about it."

There are all sorts of factors working against you:

- There are 8,000 editors managing over 700,000 categories.

- Many small directories may only be reviewed by an editor every six months . . . or far less frequently.

The editors regard a six-month wait, or longer, not particularly excessive.

- In some cases editors may even ignore submissions. As one editor explained, "there is no obligation to review them in any order nor is there a requirement to review them as a priority . . . some editors find it more productive to seek out sites on their own and rarely visit the suggested sites."

In this article we'll cover some of the more important aspects of SEO, focusing on the changes that you should find easiest to make to your web site. After you read this, you should know where to concentrate your efforts now and going forward.

HTML Tags and SEO

The <Title> tag is the most important part of the page. It is the tag that visitors see in search results, and it should contain your targeted keywords. The title tag can make your page rank or make it disappear from search results. Use this format for web page title tags:

Keywords | Website Name or Brand

It's okay to include only your keywords without the site name, especially if you aren't branding using other Internet marketing methods.

Your <h1> tag is very important. As with the web page title, you should include your targeted keywords in this tag.

Your <h2> tag is next in importance. You should put keyword variations in this tag It's okay to be more natural here.

Your <h3> is less important, but still very useful. Promote keyword variations or subheadings using the H3 tag. You can relax a bit with this one and mention keywords only once in a while.

Now that we've talked about the title tags, let's briefly touch on links so you can see one aspect of why getting the keywords in your title tag is important. An incoming link to your pages is typically formed like so:

Link: <a href ="http://www.site.com/page.htm" title="keyword">anchor text keywords</a>

It's very important to include targeted keywords in anchor text in inbound links. You should also use targeted keywords in internal links, including navigation. The search engines take strong notice of keywords in these positions.

This is true for links that are followed. But what about links that are designated nofollow? Many blogs and other sites make any links in comments automatically nofollow.

Last time we talked about Worst SEO Mistakes, this time lets discuss Alt Tag Stuffing

ALT tags are designed for blind people. Alt tags should describe images, buttons, navigation and other site elements to make browsing easier for those who can't see. Some people stuff their keywords into ALT tags, in hopes of ranking better in search results. This doesn't work. If spotted, you'll be punished.

On top of being ineffective, it's a real hassle for blind people who have to listen to the BS webmasters stuff into these tags to manipulate search engines. Use alt tags for image descriptions, and don't worry about the keywords.

Comment Spam

There are several types of comment spam.

One type uses robots to put in generic BS comments and links back to their owner's site in hopes of getting more valuable inbound links. Google discovered this and doesn't count comment links anymore. Bloggers also use the nofollow tag, so it doesn't matter if there are links in comments.

Another way to spam comments is to leave generic comments like "I did an article about this too, come check it out" in hopes of driving traffic and subscriptions.

Blog comments are designed for discussion, so saying something useful without intent to get something back plays a lot better in the long term. You get respect and eventually the blogger becomes more interested in you. Then you get your link.

Forum Spam

Forum spam involves leaving forum messages disguised as editorials, but are nothing more than ads for a website.

This type of spam looks really nasty and irritates all forum users. Don't do it. If you want to drive visitors from forums, participate in discussions, offer advice and help everyone. You will gain respect and people will visit your site from the signature. This time however, instead of saying "who the hell is that guy?!" they will land on the home page wit the thought of "that guy is good, let's see what he's built here."

Reliance on Meta Tags

Meta tag's days are not over. Keyword meta tags do work. I would spend more than just a few minutes on keyword meta tags. The description meta tag, is very useful. It is the description that shows in search results, so make sure there are clear calls to action.

Submission to a Bunch of Social Media Sites

You've probably seen those one-vote articles sitting in no-man's-land with headlines like "New marketing methods" and "Super interactive website www.spamsite.com" Those are attempts by marketers to get diggs, reddits and other types of votes. Social media marketing is a craft of its own, and a link to a generic site doesn't do it. You can learn a great deal about social media marketing over at Sphinn.

Automated content generation involves a bot scraping the net, mixing articles and producing low value pages camouflaged as a web site. It's often part of the link farm an AdSense site.

Duplicate content detection has improved to the point that search engines will know in no time if you're spamming.

Frames

This is not spam, but a bad mistake, like building a Flash-based web site. Frames are hard to crawl for spiders; they have no unique URLs to link to and are horrible from a usability perspective. Sites that use frames lose on all fronts.

Cloaking

Cloaking still works if done correctly. Some good SEOs still use cloaking, but if you're new, stay away from it. Cloaking presents a normal page to visitors but a super-optimized page to search engine spiders.

Hidden Text

Hidden text involves stuffing keywords onto a page and making keywords the same color as the background. This is an absolutely pointless technique since search engines discount pages if they see keyword stuffing.

If you put legitimate text or an optimized article on your site as hidden text, just to make page look shorter, it still doesn't make sense. There are CSS "hide/show" tricks that can conceal text while being search engine friendly.

Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing involves putting a bunch of keywords on a page simply to get higher rankings. It's pointless. Search engines can tell when you're using too many keywords for natural content, and your visitors will find keyword-stuffed content to be difficult to read.

Doorway Pages

Doorway pages are one-page websites optimized for a specific keyword and made with one purpose - to rank in the search results. All links on the "doorway" page lead to the real website, essentially acting as an entrance, hence the name "doorway page." Search engine do not like doorway pages, but they still work.

Worst SEO Mistakes

In this article we cover some of the worst SEO mistakes. Some of these will cause the search engines to ignore you; others will cause potential visitors to ignore you; still others may make your site disappear from the search engine results pages entirely.

We'll go over each practice and explain why you shouldn't do it. We'll even tell you what you should be doing.
Flash If you're making a new website and thinking of using Flash - stop. Though Adobe made Flash crawlable and shared technology with Google and Yahoo (leaving out Microsoft), Flash is still a bad choice.

If you don't show much content to the search engines, you will have to invest more in links. Not only does a Flash site cost more to make, but you'll need more money to optimize it. If there is no real reason to use Flash, don't. If you want cool movies and features, consider embedding Flash videos and using cool CSS styles.

No Use of Title Tags

The most powerful HTML tag you have at your disposal - Put keywords you target the page for into the tag. This is the part that shows up in search results as a big blue link, so make it count.

Another mistake webmasters make is to put something like "Welcome To...." in the title tag. Aaron Wall calls this "Welcome to low rankings."

Title Tag Duplication

Many designers create a site design without much regard for SEO, using one title tag for an entire website. Make sure to vary the title tags on your pages.

Messed up Robots.txt

It's a good idea to have a file to keep your error log clean of robot.txt requests, but if you can mess up a lot if you use it incorrectly. Here's how it looks, assuming you don't want to block ANY pages:

Not Using Keywords in Internal Links and Navigation

Your internal onsite links have as much SEO weight as some outside links. If your home page has link authority, then links from your home page to internal pages pass pagerank in the same manner as outside sites pass pagerank to your home page.

By linking from your most powerful pages to internal pages with keyword-rich links, you're doing exactly the same thing as getting

keyword-rich inbound links from high PR pages.

To make the most use of link power, make sure that your navigation consists of keyword-rich, targeted descriptions. Do the same with keywords scattered within content. Don't worry about your footer; Google doesn't put much weight on those.

"Advertise with us as we get 1,000,000 hits each month." But do they really?

You know, a week doesn't go by when an ad says, "Advertise with us as we get 1,000,000 hits each month." But do they really?

Probably not.

You see, a "hit" is an access request to a web server, not just a visitor. So, if a page has 99 tiny graphics which make up the web page, each view of that page registers as "100 hits". And if the visitor views 5 pages, that one visitor will register 500 hits on the site.

This is why advertisers LOVE to tell you about hits because they know you think that means people when it really doesn't.

Hits vs. Visitors: Getting a Real Count on Your Traffic

Ever see the claim "We get 80,000 hits a month" on a web site? Or the scrolling counter at the bottom of a page? What does it all mean and is it accurate? What is the difference between a hit and a visitor?

A "hit" is not a visitor to the web site, but a hit on the web server. A hit on the web server can be a graphic, java applet, the html file, etc. So, if a site has 79 small graphics on the page, every visitor to the site registers as 80 hits on the server (79 graphics plus the html file). In this case, 80,000 hits translates to just 1,000 visitors.

As webmasters, designers, business owners, SEOs, etc., we are not concerned with hits to a site. We want to know the number of visitors to our site. And we don't just want to know about every visitor--we want to know about every unique visitor. So if we can't count hits, can we use a counter?

The problem with using counters to track our visitors is they are set up to measure page views, not unique visitors. Everytime someone views your page, whether it's the first time or the twentieth, that visitor is counted. And if the page times out for some reason and they "Reload," it counts them again. And if someone just wants to have fun with your counter, they can exit and enter the site several times and are counted as a visitor each time--even if they never look at product.

So if you can't count hits and you can't use a counter, how do you track the traffic on your site? Use a web traffic analysis program. A web traffic analysis program will give you vital information about the traffic coming to your site, including where visitors are coming from, what paths your visitors are taking and which pages are the main exit points of your site.

Your web host should automatically provide you with a traffic analysis program, but there are a lot of programs to choose from.

Now that you understand the difference you can fire back at those advertisers and get the real truth about their traffic levels.

Search for the phrase “SEO myths” in Google (without quotes) and you’ll get 243,000 hits. With all the major search engines keeping their algorithms under lock and key, and making modifications without notice, it’s no wonder that false beliefs get perpetuated. It’s time to clear the air.

We published an article here on SEO Chat back in June 2007 about SEO myths. These things don’t seem to go away no matter how much you try to educate people. In fact, the search engines themselves contribute to their perpetuation in a sense. After all, they’re constantly tweaking their algorithms so the things that used to work simply don’t anymore – which leads to more myths when people stubbornly cling to old practices, or when a particular change makes it look like one thing is happening (i.e. a Google 30 penalty) when the actual cause is something completely different.

Many myths come from wishful thinking. My favorite along those lines is a variation of “if I just do X, I’ll score high in the search engines.” And “X” can be anything from get enough links, submit your site to enough directories, get the magic amount of keyword density – you name it. The truth is that SEO is a process with no real shortcuts, and no ONE thing will guarantee you a top position in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Another form of “wishful thinking” myth states that “X is all-important,” where “X” can be PageRank, meta tags, or what have you. I won’t say that PageRank doesn’t matter; that’s another myth. But for most purposes it doesn’t. It really depends on what you’re trying to achieve. You can have a popular site and not have a PR of 10.

I expect this won’t be the last time we visit this topic. I’m including myths that are popular not only among practicing SEOs, but among some of the clients you might encounter. As you educate yourselves, you may also find that you need to educate your clients about actual SEO practices. The Ranked Hard comic strip that inspired this article makes that point very clearly. So without further ado, let’s bust some myths!

SEO is Smoke and Mirrors

Like the client in the Ranked Hard cartoon, you might encounter a prospective customer who tried to work with another SEO company that was secretive about its practices. Maybe they were told “our tactics are proprietary” or “what we do is far too complicated to explain.” Your prospect might even have been burned by this other company, so they may be leery about dealing with you.

Real SEO is not smoke and mirrors; it’s not a scam, and it’s not merely “a collection of tricks to fool search engines,” as Lee Odden points out in another article which debunked several SEO myths. But it’s easy to see why some people would believe that. There really are a lot of scammers out there who make incredible promises but use devious methods and care only about getting their victims’ money.

Speaking of incredible promises, let’s talk about another classic SEO myth inspired by scammers: an SEO can guarantee your placement at the top of the SERPs, thus eliminating the risk to your business. That’s hogwash; I’d use stronger language, but my boss would disapprove (especially if we start ranking for the term!). A firm that offers that kind of guarantee on your SEO is probably approaching it in a way that will harm your company.

Some companies that offer guarantees to get to the top of the SERPs will use keywords that no one else is using. So your site ends up ranking for less competitive keywords. In and of itself, this is not a bad thing, but if searchers aren’t using those keywords to find the kinds of products and services you offer, it’s pointless. If you sell raincoats in the US market, what good is it to hold a top-ranked position for “mackintosh” – unless you’re specifically selling to British expatriates living in the US?

Such firms may also use a limited selection of keywords for your website. That might work for a time, but using a greater diversity of keywords will put you in a better position the next time the search engines tweak their algorithm. Think of it as evolution in action.

Finally, another common trick for SEO companies that offer top placement guarantees shows up in the fine print of their contracts. Does it specifically say that they will use SEO to get there, or will they use pay-per-click? Just about anyone can get a top ad placement in Google if they’re willing to pay enough. But that’s probably not what you hired that SEO company for.

This article originally intent was about explaining how advertisers can take advantage of Adsense to target specific sites. While researching this topic, however, I slammed the brakes on my theme. I noticed that Google seemed to be backing off from the "post your ad here" approach, which focused on the advertiser. You can still see that approach, but it is changing. Keep reading to find out how. Google is moving toward a method of displaying ad groups that are personalized based on a searcher's previous searches. With this discovery I am going to write this article in two sections (and hopefully one part).

The first section is going to focus on Adsense targeting from the advertiser's viewpoint. This approach, known as placement-targeted or site-targeted campaigns, allows an unprecedented level of customization and targeting by the advertiser. Not only can the advertiser target a particular website, but a particular page or a particular sub-group of pages can be targeted. We will look at how Google is allowing advertisers to pick sites from selected lists and how they set different bids for different sites.

The second section will look at how Google is remembering a searcher's previous activity and using this information in displaying Adsense results on web sites the user visits. Now Adsense is not only dependent upon the site's content, but also on the search behavior of the user, independent of cookies and even logging in -- though the user (or the computer) must have used the search engine at a prior time.

We will also quickly discuss whether, at the end of the day, any present advert placement application can realistically catch up with Google's Adsense in the next three to five years, or whether creators of such applications should simply seek another line of work -- social networking e-commerce centers, perhaps.

Adsense Targeting: Adsense For Context

Google advertisers can increase their click-through rates by creating placement (or site) targeted content campaigns, choosing to position their ads on specific sites. It's content control/placement on steroids. By picking selected sites and bidding, you can ensure that your ads get seen by a much wider audience; all this definitely changes the size of the budget, but that's why we pass on the cost of the advertising to the customer, eh?

It all started that way, and now you have site-targeted campaigns, consisting of ad groups that contain lists of Web sites, not just keywords. Placement-targeted ad groups can include all content ad types: text, static, and animated GIFs, even video with sizes ranging from skyscraper to banner to defined boxes. Advertisers can choose whether to be charged on every one thousand page impressions (CPM) or on a cost-per-click basis.

According to Google Adwords, advertisers can choose to display their ads on specific pages within a site, or even subsections of pages. For example, advertisers can choose to advertise on the New York Times Web site in the business, fashion, health, travel, or sports section.

Google's content group is huge and growing rapidly. Some say new sites are joining at the rate of at least 100,000 per month. Information on some of the top sites in the network can be found here. Almost every major media channel is represented, from leading magazine and newspaper publishers to television networks.

The ads are then placed with the sites you choose. This is a improvement on the normal placement process, which is stated by Google as Google continually scans the millions of pages from the content network to look for relevant matches with your keywords and other campaign data. When we find a match, your ad becomes eligible to run on that page. Google's extensive Web search and linguistic processing technology can decipher the meaning of virtually any content network page to ensure we're showing the most relevant ads.

Normally advertisers find which Web sites display Google AdWords content ads by using Google's placement tool, using a list of categories and keywords, and also listing specific URLs of sites, or by setting the desired user demographics. The tool digs into the pool of site publishers and lets you choose which sites will carry your ads.

As a quick rundown of what I have described in the last few paragraphs, here is what Google has to say, in brief. (This can be found here).

You can select sites for your placement-targeted campaign in two ways:

Name the sites where you'd like to advertise.

Give us a list of words that describe the type of site you're looking for.

A site must be part of the Google Network in order to be available for your placement-targeted campaign. A big advantage of winning a bid to place an ad could be that your ad could occupy the first four spaces, since you could stretch your ad to occupy four spaces. This is due to the expanded text ad specification of Adsense. If you specified that a strip of four AdWords ads should appear in a banner at the bottom of a page, placement-targeted ads will muscle the other ads off the ad unit and be displayed. Optimize Page Titles - BUT What about Article Titles?

To optimize page titles keep it short. Search engines will show no more than 60 or 70 characters (including spaces) when they list your page in the SERPs. If you get any longer than that, they’ll cut it off.

- BUT What about Article Titles?

You can follow the same guidelines for your article titles. Or if you choose you can spice things up a little bit. Michael Gray wrote a very nice article on optimizing Wordpress page titles that talks about creating a page title and a post title at the same time, and explains why you might want to make the two different. He focuses strongly on keywords. Indeed, one of the reasons that you might want to make your article/post title different from your page title is that you can optimize for different keywords.

But there are other reasons you might want to make your article title different. In another article, Gray talks about Title Bait. He also includes several examples. I believe he intended them to work as both page titles and article titles. He wants searchers to see the title and feel almost compelled to click through to the article. Depending on the approach you take to page titles, however, you might prefer to limit these techniques to your article titles.

You can play on titillation to spice up an otherwise-bland topic. For example, when Gray wanted to point out that one prominent blogger was just two clicks away from adult content, what title did he use? Six Degrees of a Lesbian Porn Scraper. You have to admit, that gets attention.

You can also be controversial or, if it’s relevant, clearly show your readers that they’re about to encounter an entertaining rant. That’s the approach Gray took when he titled one article Yahoo: Yeah We Suck and We Don’t Give a Damn!

And you can always play the list card. Had I structured this article a little differently, I could have called it something like Ways to Optimize Your Page Titles.Somehow, we just can’t resist something that offers to sum up a complicated subject with just a few tips. Sometimes it doesn’t even have to be a few steps. And it doesn’t have to be a website either; there are books based on this idea. I was delighted to see, for example, that Amazon is currently selling a book titled The 100 Greatest Inventions of All Time. Why not take advantage of a marketing approach that’s as old as Moses?

For something a little more up-to-date, you can always mix some pop culture references into your title. Famous quotes or concepts work as well. How about The Silly String Theory of the Universe for an article on more technical uses for the toy (our military uses it to detect tripwires)? I admit I’m a little rusty at this; you can probably come up with much better ideas. Of course, you’ll have to rise to the challenge of being professional, informative, and humorous all at the same time, as Gray himself notes – but it can be done. Good luck!

Great Page Titles, Short and Sweet

Michael Nguyen, writing for Social Patterns, lists eleven rules for writing page titles. Aaron Wall also lists eleven, but they’re a slightly different set. Matt McGee, writing for Gooruze, lists six. Still, there are certain things that all three of them agree upon. Here they are, in no particular order.

First, keep it short. Search engines will show no more than 60 or 70 characters (including spaces) when they list your page in the SERPs. If you get any longer than that, they’ll cut it off.

Second, be accurate, relevant, and descriptive. Give both the search bot and the human searcher a good idea of what to expect of your page’s content. If possible, front-load your most important keyword, and avoid keyword stuffing.

Third, have a unique title for every page on your site. If you don’t, the search engines might think you’re displaying duplicate content, and that brings its own headaches. Your human visitors will also have a hard time telling the difference between your pages.

Fourth, write in plain English (or whatever language you’re using for your site’s content). Yes, it’s hard not to want to get fancy. As Graywolf pointed out in his SEO blog recently, “Spring Sunglass Trends in New York City” is simply not as entertaining a title as “Specs in the City.” And in that case, the title might work. But it’s too easy to get so clever that the meaning slips past your target audience. Remember, searchers aren’t reading page titles so much as skimming them, so you need to write a title that makes it clear from the get-go what the page is all about.

Fifth, don’t stuff your title with keywords. One at the beginning is fine. Likewise, don’t add unneeded words to your title. You might be surprised by how much you can cut. Nguyen used the following example: “Click here to go to my page” could be cut to simply “my page.”

Sixth, here’s a direct quote from Aaron Wall to give you a good idea of what a page title should do: Good titles evoke an emotional response, ask a question, or promise something (that the landing page fulfills). Next time, What about Article Titles?

Page Titles Make You a Star

Page titles get seen by the search engines first and the searchers second. Write a relevant page title and you have a much better chance of showing up for the right keywords in the search engine results pages (SERPs). Think of it as receiving a reward for helping the search engines figure out how to classify your page.

The searchers will see your page title after the search engines – but it’s often the first thing they will see about your site. They will probably choose whether or not to follow the link to your site based on your page title. So you have to please both a bot and a real human being. That’s reason enough to spend extra time on your title.

Searchers will bookmark your site if they like what they see. What’s the default text used for a bookmark? You guessed it: the page title. I admit, when I bookmark a page, I’ll change the text; I usually shorten it or make it more descriptive (or both). If you don’t force your visitors to take this extra step, you’ll put a smile on their faces. And consider this: if a visitor doesn’t change the bookmark and it’s not descriptive enough, he may forget why he bookmarked your site in the first place. That makes the bookmark kind of useless to both of you.

When someone is trying to find a site that they visited and liked but didn’t bookmark, they’re likely to check their browser history. Guess how web pages show up in a browser’s history? Give yourself a gold star if you said page titles. Guess what happens if your page title isn’t descriptive? It won’t stand out in a browser history list, and you’ll lose a return visit.

Does your site feature an RSS generator? If so, it probably turns your page titles into headlines. Those headlines entice subscribers to your feed to come visit your site and read the entire article. In other words, as I’ve been saying for the past three paragraphs, good page titles not only encourage first-time visitors to check you out; they also help you get repeat visits.

Finally, there’s the matter of links. Here I am talking about an on-page optimization factor, and now I’m dragging in links?! But that’s an off-page optimization issue, right? Well, not exactly. Sometimes on-page and off-page factors feed each other, and this is one example of that. As you saw when I mentioned bookmarks and browser history lists, when there’s a link involving a web page, the browser defaults to the page title.

So do a lot of people who link to your page. So when Jazzy Judy writes her blog entry about your music store and its incredible selection of jazz recordings going all the way back to George Gershwin and Louis Armstrong, her anchor text will be your page title. Anchor text is widely believed to play a prominent role in how Google decides whether a page is relevant for particular keywords. Next time I’ll explain Great Page Titles, Short and Sweet.

Optimize YOUR Page Title

Please optimize YOUR page title! It’s so boring I’m sure you wouldn’t want to steal it. Seriously, in this article I’m going to explain what page titles are (as opposed to post titles or article titles) and how and why to optimize them.

Look at the top of your browser, above the address bar and the line of links labeled File, Edit, etc. Next to the symbol for the browser itself you’ll find a title. That is the page title. It should not be confused with the actual title of this article, even though the two read nearly the same.

In HTML, you specify a web page’s title in its title element. You use title tags, like so:

<title>This is a web page title</title>

With some content management or blogging systems, you can specify a title tag that is different from the title you give to the post or article on that page. You might find that very desirable for SEO purposes. Other CMS platforms might not have that functionality built in, but boast plug-ins that extend their native capabilities. For example, the popular blogging platform WordPress isn’t optimized for SEO.

You may want to optimize both your page title and your article/post title. Since the two have different purposes, you may even want to have two significantly different titles. There’s nothing wrong with that, as long as both of them are relevant. You may also choose to make your page title and your article/post title the same (or nearly so), as you’ll find I do on many of my pages. There’s nothing wrong with that, either.

But maybe you’re wondering why you should optimize your page title at all. Or perhaps you’ve put a few keywords into your title and you figure you’re done. Or maybe you came up with a page title that you believe is good enough to use on every page of your site. Next time I’ll explain why you want to optimize your page titles as soon as I stop cringing.

Some of the special issues that newcomers to SEO face. Lately I’ve become rather fond of the idea of thinking like a visitor to attract visitors. So pretend, for a moment, that you’ve never heard of your company and you’re visiting your own website for the first time. Perhaps you came in through the search engines, or someone who knows your interests sent you the link, or you may even have read a story about the site in a blog. Why did you come here?

If you said “because I saw the link,” try again. Anyone who visits a web site is looking for something.

They want to buy a product, be entertained, solve a problem, get some information…you get the idea. So what do you offer your visitor?

You can see why you need to ask this question before you begin any SEO campaign. What you offer your visitor affects everything

from the keywords you choose to the structure of your site’s content to the methods you use to promote your web site. And by the way, the field you’re in may have less effect on how you answer this question than you think.

Does that sound a little crazy?

Let’s consider a fairly mundane field: plumbing.

Are you a plumber?

Do you sell tools and plumbing parts to professional plumbers, or do-it-yourselfers, or some combination?

Is your business a plumbing school?

Do you offer a newsletter to keep plumbing professionals up to date?

Do you sell books on plumbing?

Do you publish articles on plumbing?

Do you promote a convention for plumbers?

Do you publish a trade magazine for plumbers?

Are you running a website for a plumbers’ union?

You can see from this list that there are a ton of specialty interests just in the field of plumbing. Each of these different kinds of sites will want to attract a slightly different audience. And each person who visits a site might have a slightly different reason for doing so. They might even have drastically different reasons, to be honest.

While working on this update, for example, I ended up on the web pages of a large plumbing supplier. I clicked their FAQ; after scrolling down a bit, I saw links to some interesting-looking pages (a “fun quotes” page). When I got to the top of that page, I saw links to more fun plumbing pages – a list of plumbing jokes, various words of wisdom, a founder’s page, and so forth.

A plumber might visit this site to get a part – or a non-plumber might end up here to be entertained, because some of these pages come up for their own special keywords, like “plumber jokes.” The point is that you need to be clear and focus on why your visitors are coming to your site in order to give them what they're looking for. Or, put another way, you need to be clear about what you’re offering them so that they know what to expect when they get there.

Ask the Right Questions Before You SEO Your Site!

Every web site owner wants more traffic and higher rankings in the search engines. In the midst of an SEO campaign, however, it’s easy to lose sight of the forest for the trees. So before you change a single title, you might want to shift your focus to answer some important questions.

So what do I mean by losing sight of the forest for the trees anyway? You’ve probably heard that expression since you were a teenager at least. You may even know that it means focusing on the details to the point that you lose sight of the big picture – and with the amount of detail work that goes into a proper SEO project, that’s easy to do.

Changing the questions you ask can shift your focus back to that bigger picture. You need to know what the big picture is before you do any search engine optimization, or you’ll waste a substantial amount of effort. Fortunately, you may only need to change a few words in the questions you already ask. Ease off just a little on the “what” and “how” questions and start asking a few “why” questions. I’ll give examples in the sections that follow.

I expect many of you will look at these questions and think that they should be asked well before a site goes live, very early in the design process. That’s probably true. But it’s also true that web sites evolve over time, rather like people. They change, grow, and adapt to conditions in the marketplace. By the time a web site has been up for a couple of years (or even less), it might be a very different creature from what the site owner originally had in mind.

This kind of change is not a bad thing, per se. We all get a certain amount of satisfaction out of growing and tweaking our sites, and then watching what happens. If we’re not looking clearly at what the site is turning into, however, we can’t see what it needs.

Anthony Kirlew, who writes a blog called Old School SEO and has been in the search engine marketing business since 1999, wrote about these important questions recently. I’m not going to cover his fourth question – “how will they find our web site?” – because we all know the answer to that one: SEO, SEM, and maybe even SMO (social media optimization). Instead, we’ll look at a few “why” questions.

GoDaddy is Charging for Spam Complaints - Ouch!

Seems like the folks over at GoDaddy are charging their email marketing customers if they get spam complaints. Deliverability.com broke the news when they got an email with this information sent to them from a GoDaddy customer. GoDaddy will now charge customers $200 to "manage" their complaints. Even worse is that if the customer wants to then leave them and transfer their domains to another registrar they can't do it until they pay GoDaddy $75!

To cover all of their bases, it appears that if one of their customers uses an Email Service Provider outside of GoDaddy to advertise their GoDaddy-hosted site and they get complaints from one of their customer's recipients, they could be hit with a fine or other action.

Wow. Serious Email Service Providers (ESPs) usually do this as a service to customers and won't allow spammers to use their services. But let's face it, everyone gets a complaint now and then, even customers with best intentions. The difference is that serious ESPs want to help their customers learn best practices about email marketing and not turn complaints into a new revenue stream.

If you use GoDaddy to host your website be careful. And any time you're looking for a serious ESP, make sure you ask if they have a deliverability and abuse department - most serious ESPs do, looks like GoDaddy might not.

GoDaddy should stick to what they're good at, being a registrar. Leave the email marketing heavy-lifting to those who "want" to do it and help businesses grow.

Google has Banned My Website

It's simple... Are you asking Google to penalize your website?

I'm sure you're probably thinking; Well, of course not! Yet daily I see new people complaining in search engine optimization forums that their websites have been banned by Google and they "have no idea why".

These people claim they've done nothing wrong and are absolutely clueless as to why their site is no longer in Google.

What NOT to do when optimizing your onpage ranking factors

How do you know if you've been banned?

First let me show you how to see if you're clearly banned by Google. Often times people think they've been banned, when in reality they've just dropped in ranking and can't find their website. There are a couple of things you can do.

1.) Check Google's search results.
2.) View the Google toolbar.

Go to Google and enter your entire URL into Google's search box and click "search"

Google says there is no information available for this URL? This means that the URL is no longer in Google's database.If you enter a brand new website into Google, you'll always get this message until the website has been indexed or the website has been banned by Google for some reason.

Another way you can quickly see if your website has been banned is by Viewing the Google Toolbar. Download the Google Toolbar Visit Here http://toolbar.google.com

Once it's installed, simply visit your website. If the Google toolbar is completely gray, this means you have been banned by Google.

Ok, so now we know how to tell if our website has been banned. What can cause your website to get banned?

There are many onpage ranking factors AND offpage ranking factors that can cause Google to ban your website. Today, we'll focus on only the onpage things that can cause your site to get banned.

Before I begin, I want you to know that many websites still get away with doing some of these things. They DO NOT help your rankings and are simply a waste of time, so don't try them. Sooner or later Google will catch up to these websites and will remove them. It's just not worth the risk, when doing them doesn't help your ranking to begin with. Banned: * Note: Most SEOs call this "gray barred". Not Banned:

Hidden Text

Hidden Text is simply text that users can't see when they visit your webpage. Some webmasters will do this so that they can add keywords throughout their webpage without it interfering with what the visitors actually see. Yet, the search engines can still see hidden text.

For example, let's say you have a white background on your website. If you wanted to hide text, you would simply make the color of your text white (#FFFFFF) and users couldn't see it.

Alt image tag spamming

This is another way that people will try to cram keywords into their website, allowing search engines to see their keywords, but not allowing visitors to notice any difference in their website. The real purpose of an alt image tag is if a user visits your website and the graphic will not load, or is disabled by their web browser, text will appear instead of the graphic. This is often used for blind people.Alt image spamming is something you want to stay clear of. Using alt image tags are good, but you can overdo it.

Meta Tag Stuffing

What I'm referring to here is when people throw in thousands of the same exact keyword into their meta tags.

For example, the following website is trying to rank well for "tents".

This is obviously ridiculous. Google doesn't use Meta Tags when ranking websites. Google WILL penalize it, but it WILL NOT help you... so, why would anyone do something like this? Stay away from it.

Title Tag Stuffing

The title is what appears in the top left hand corner of your webpage. Below is an example of Title Tag Stuffing Don't do it...

You only need to include your keyword(s) one time in your title tag. Anymore than 1 time will only dilute the effect, and if you overdo it as shown above, you may get banned.

Those are just a few of the things that people are continuing to do online. These things WILL eventually get your website banned and WILL NOT help you rank well. It's just a waste of time and effort, plus just plain ignorant to waste your time on something that doesn't work and will get your website banned from the search engines.

If you want maximum results for your article marketing, you would be best served by adopting the following tactics:

Target the top article directories and go for a few quality links instead of hundreds of low-quality links. In other words, hit the top article directories and devote the rest of your time on the next couple of steps.

Find themed article directories / content sites that are related to the niche that your article addresses. For example, if you write about CSS, you would be looking for directories and websites that accept content on website development and more directly, website programming.

Use articles as link building tools - find high-ranking sites related to yours and instead of simply asking for links, pitch your article to them as an offer to their readers. If your article is engaging, fresh and unique, most websites will gladly publish it on their websites (or at least give you a reference link), leading to increased traffic as well as link popularity. There are a few more things that you can do to make sure you came out ahead of the search engines’ spam filters:

Avoiding Duplicate Content Penalties

Ideally, you shouldn’t publish articles that you submit on your own website – this “may” help you avoid the duplicate content penalty a bit. On the other hand, this does not address the concern that carbon copies of your article will suddenly pop up in hundreds of places on the Internet. The key is to remember that articles also mean traffic, and along with deep links, getting traffic to the key money-making areas of your site is very important.

Find Quality Article Sites

There are very few article directories (like Ezine Articles ) that have a stellar reputation within the search engines. Directories like Go Articles and ISnare are popular precisely because they themselves have managed to rank highly within the search engines.

�Why is Article Marketing so darn important in 2008?�

If you follow the seo forums, you’ll notice that an old search engine marketing strategy is now suddenly everyone’s “seo strategy” of choice. Yes, I’m talking about article marketing .

I’ve often mentioned the benefits of article marketing, but with Google’s recent updates to its ranking algorithms, the topic merits a fresh look. With everyone even remotely interested in achieving decent search engine rankings turning to article marketing, it is critical for your website’s success that you fully understand what traditional article marketing is about and how you can benefit from it. Note that as search engines become smarter with reciprocal links, article marketing - especially the sort of marketing that guarantees good results - will require some expert knowledge.

Traditional article marketing works something like this:

You write (or pay someone to write it) a 600-word article, take out a list of 100-200 article directories, and submit your article to all of them (or you could hire someone to do that as well). In a week or so, your article is accepted and published by the article directories, not to mention thousands of websites who pick up articles from these directories.

Then, after a week or two of submitting the article, search engines pick it up and suddenly see hundreds, if not thousands, of new links to your site. Even if these are low-quality links in some cases (there are very few highly reputed article directories, and most of them are not themed), your rankings benefits thanks to the sheer number of links you’ve built. Over a period of time, after several article submissions, you notice an improvement in your search engine rankings at the next algorithm update. Yes, those links have made all the difference, and now your site is starting to get higher search engine placement.

By the looks of it, article marketing has everything search engines ask for – quality content, contextual links and even one-way links (as opposed to reciprocal links, which are less valuable).

However, to draw a parallel, just blindly submitting articles to hundreds of directories is like shooting in the dark - you’re essentially banking on getting tons of non-themed links in the hope that they will be enough to improve your rankings (you may get lucky now and then and have some big website in your niche pick up your article and run it).

Important: The reason I say that many of these article links are non-themed is because the search engines not only look at the page your link is located on, BUT also look at the “website” your link is located on. All of these article directories are probably not related to your website in theme.

If you are serious about your rankings, you’ll have to get your hands dirty and chase down the right links yourself (only at the beginning of course - as your site’s popularity increases, your articles will generate their own links and you will get requests from other websites requesting your permission to reprint your articles).

The case for adopting a personal approach to article marketing becomes air-tight if you consider the following:

Search engines are clamping down harder on duplicate content , using the “date of discovery” (when the SE spider first finds the content) and other factors to find out which article is original and which are “copies”.

Search engines are getting better at evaluating “ themed ” links – links from industry-related websites, with a greater emphasis on niche sites dealing with one or two themes rather than general purpose sites dealing with a large set of themes (like article directories).

Search engines already consider anchor text as vulnerable to spam, so if hundreds of links pointing to your site suddenly pop up (with the EXACT same anchor text), this would be a “red-flag” event.

In other words, while article submissions are excellent tools for gaining traffic and rankings, search engines are catching up to the fact that spammers may use “blind” submissions in order to artificially boost their link popularity, and are looking to implement filters that can catch spammers. This will not happen immediately and maybe not even in the next year, but as the search engine wars (between Google, Yahoo and the rest) heat up, search engines will get stricter in terms of what they allow to rank highly in their search results.

Note that when I say search engines, I’m really talking about Google (which current serves 40-50 percent of all search engine traffic). However, as article spam increases, the other search engines are bound to implement changes that will catch it as well.

Hits vs. Visitors: Getting a Real Count on Your Traffic

You know, a week doesn't go by when an ad says, "Advertise with us as we get 1,000,000 hits each month." But do they really?

Probably not.

You see, a "hit" is an access request to a web server, not just a visitor. So, if a page has 99 tiny graphics which make up the web page, each view of that page registers as "100 hits". And if the visitor views 5 pages, that one visitor will register 500 hits on the site.

This is why advertisers LOVE to tell you about hits because they know you think that means people when it really doesn't.

Hits vs. Visitors: Getting a Real Count on Your Traffic

Ever see the claim "We get 80,000 hits a month" on a web site? Or the scrolling counter at the bottom of a page? What does it all mean and is it accurate? What is the difference between a hit and a visitor?

A "hit" is not a visitor to the web site, but a hit on the web server. A hit on the web server can be a graphic, java applet, the html file, etc. So, if a site has 79 small graphics on the page, every visitor to the site registers as 80 hits on the server (79 graphics plus the html file). In this case, 80,000 hits translates to just 1,000 visitors.

As webmasters, designers, business owners, SEOs, etc., we are not concerned with hits to a site. We want to know the number of visitors to our site. And we don't just want to know about every visitor--we want to know about every unique visitor. So if we can't count hits, can we use a counter?

The problem with using counters to track our visitors is they are set up to measure page views, not unique visitors. Everytime someone views your page, whether it's the first time or the twentieth, that visitor is counted. And if the page times out for some reason and they "Reload," it counts them again. And if someone just wants to have fun with your counter, they can exit and enter the site several times and are counted as a visitor each time--even if they never look at product.

So if you can't count hits and you can't use a counter, how do you track the traffic on your site? Use a web traffic analysis program. A web traffic analysis program will give you vital information about the traffic coming to your site, including where visitors are coming from, what paths your visitors are taking and which pages are the main exit points of your site.

Your web host should automatically provide you with a traffic analysis program, but there are a lot of programs to choose from.

So here we are in the Caribbean, on vacation. It is amazing that each day my businesses continue to market, sell, and grow. That is the real benefit of a Home Based Business.

You see I do get online while the family is still sleeping off the prior evenings party. About a hour each morning is all that is necessary for me to keep the engines stoked. Well, to most people this is a significant issue because there usually aren�t large budgets and/or time available. So at the very worst case it can be frustrating and it could negatively affect your motivation. And this is a major reason 97% of the folks trying to get a business running on the Internet fail.

My business is based upon the coach methodology. I have �been there, done that� and you can benefit from my experiences and knowledge. I have been deeply involved in setting up businesses on the internet as an advisor, mentor and coach for many years. It is not difficult. It is just impossible to sort though all of the information and hype that you will encounter while trying to understand what you need to do and effectively organize yourself to get it done.

So here is a simple checklist. First, you need to select a domain name, this is how people will find your site, you may have heard the term URL. Then you will need to decide how to get your site designed, built and put in operation. Speaking of operational sites, who will be your hosting company that is the company that will provide you with the server space to put your site on. Then how will you get your site designed and built? Template, custom or do it yourself? Just these three technical items can cost you a lot of time and money.

And, that was the easy part. How will you get your website known? How will you attract potential customers? What happens when they want to buy? How do you get paid? And how do you get the product to your customer?

All of this can be a bit daunting but only because you do not have a plan and no one that you trust to ask questions and get reliable answers to help you build a realistic plan.

There are an awful lot of claims to make you wealthy overnight. The truth be known, only you can make you wealthy.

Today you probably work and get paid based on what your boss wants to pay you each hour that you work. Even if you are a salaried employee you are still getting paid based upon an hour rate. In fact, many people, maybe even you, are making less per hour than the hourly workers you know because of the time you are expected to put in. The 1755 Lisbon earthquake and, in the 19th century, armed conflicts with French and Spanish invading forces and the loss of its largest territorial possession abroad, Brazil, disrupted political stability and potential economic growth. After the Portuguese Colonial War and the Carnation Revolution coup d'état in 1974, the ruling regime was deposed in Lisbon and the country handed over its last overseas provinces in Africa.

Portugal's last overseas territory, Macau, was handed over to China in 1999.Portugal is a developed country, and has a high Human Development Index. It is the 7th most peaceful and the 13th most globalized country in the world, and has the world's 19th highest quality of life. Another legend has it that Valentine, imprisoned by Claudius; fell in love with the daughter of his jailer who visited him during confinement. Probably the most plausible story surrounding St. Valentine is one not focused on Eros(passionate love) but on agape (Christian love): he was martyred for refusing to renounce his religion.

Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin cupido, "desire"). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. Wherefore art thou rose? In the readings of Shakespeare, of course. He refers to roses more than 50 times throughout his writings. 1,000 years old. That's the age the world's oldest living rose is thought to be. Today it continues to flourish on the wall of the Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany.

The rose is a legend in it's own. The story goes that during the Roman empire, there was an incredibly beautiful maiden named Rhodanthe. Her beauty drew many zealous suitors who pursued her relentlessly. Exhausted by their pursuit, Rhodanthe was forced to take refuge from her suitors in the temple of her friend Diana. Unfortunately, Diana became jealous. And when the suitors broke down her temple gates to get near their beloved Rhodanthe, she also became angry turning Rhodanthe into a rose and her suitors into thorns.

A rose by any other name... according to Greek Mythology, it was Aphrodite who gave the rose its name.

Leave it to the romantic French to be the ones to first deliver roses. It was in the seventeenth century that French explorer Samuel deChamplain brought the first cultivated roses to North America.

The Red Rose Society was founded in 1999, providing a unique place for all lovers of roses to visit and join from all over the world! Roses are truly ageless. Recently, archaeologists discovered the fossilized remains of wild roses over 40 million years old. The people of ancient Greece used roses to accessorize. On festive occasions they would adorn themselves with garlands of roses, and splash themselves with rose-scented oil.

The first true primary red rose seen in Europe was 'Slater's Crimson China,' introduced in 1792 from China, where it had been growing wild in the mountains. Immediately, rose breeders began using it to hybridize red roses for cultivation. Ever since, the quest for the elusive perfect red rose has been the Holy Grail of rosarians: a fragrant, disease-resistant, long-lasting, long-stemmed, reblooming, perfectly formed rose with clear non-fading vivid red color. Absolute perfection still hasn't been attained, and of course never will!

Napoleon's wife Josephine so adored roses, she grew more than 250 varieties.

The Rose is the flower of love. It was created by Chloris, the Greek goddess of flowers, but of a lifeless body of a nymph which she found one day in a clearing in the woods. She asked the help of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, who gave her beauty; Dionysus, the god of wine, added nectar to give her a sweet scent, and the three Graces gave her charm, brightness and joy. Then Zephyr, the West Wind, blew away the clouds so that Apollo, the sun god, could shine and make the flower bloom. And so the Rose was born and was immediately crowned Queen of the Flowers." Clay tablets excavated in the temples of Ur in Iraq speak of the delivery of rose water intended for the sultan of Bagdad. The sultan used no fewer than 30,000 jars of rose water a year, to make his rooms smell nice for his extensive harem.

The Saracen general Saladin sent camel caravans loaded with rose water through his empire to cleanse the mosques after 'impure' crusaders had occupied the prayer rooms.

Until the early 19th century dried rose petals were believed to have mysterious powers. Napoleon gave his officers bags of rose petals to boil in white wine, to cure lead poisoning from bullet wounds, Even today, rose water is still used to refresh the hands before a feast or festive greeting, from the Middle East to northern India.

There is a special rose language invented as a secret means of communication between lovers who were not allowed to express their love for one another openly in the harems of the Middle East. In the mid 18th century Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, the wife of the British ambassador in Constantinople, described this in her letters, which were published after her death. These letters inspired many books on the language of flowers, each describing the secret message hidden in each flower. A red rose bud stands for budding desire, while an open white rose asks "WIll you love me?". An open red rose means "I'm full of love and desire", while an open yellow rose asks "Don't you love me any more?".

THE ROSE IN HISTORY

As with most plants that have long been closely associated with the history of people, the rose has become deeply ingrained in our culture and beliefs. The Romans, who originally cultivated the rose as a medicinal plant, also used the blooms to enhance their festivities.

The Greeks, however, accepted the rose as a complement to the progress of their culture. Whenever a secret meeting was held, the Greeks used roses to decorate the ceilings of their conference rooms. This indicated that everything discussed was confidential, which is the origin of the phrase sub rosa.

In fifteenth century England , roses were chosen to represent the two rival royal factions: the white rose of the House of York and the red rose of the House of Lancaster. The heraldic Tudor Rose emerged as the emblem of royalty. More recently, roses have been used as motifs to further the aspirations of political parties and national sporting teams.

Evolution of the Rose

Throughout the history of civilization, no other flower has been so immortalized and integrated into daily life as the rose. From poetry to music, from festivities to wars, Mother’s Day to St Valentine’s Day, and birth to death, the rose has held a unique role.

There are over 4000 roses listed in this monograph, and they are testimony enough to convince even the ultimate skeptic that roses have a rich tapestry of evolution stretching way back in time. Just how the genus Rosa managed to, and continues to, evolve into one of the world’s favorite flowers is an interesting horticultural puzzle. To fully appreciate the development of roses up to the present day, a brief exploration of the early history of roses before 1800 is needed.

Roses in Antiquity

Fossil remains found on a slate deposit in Colorado indicates that roses estimated 40 million years ago in North America . Other important fossil findings through the Northern Hemisphere have confirmed the very ancient existence of roses growing as far north as Alaska and Norway and as far south as Mexico . No Wild Roses have been found to grow below the equator, although roses now thrive in the Southern Hemisphere thanks to the deliberate intervention of civilization.

Where or when the genus Rosa originated is unknown in spite of the wealth of fossil studies. In theory, the early Wild Roses were most likely cultivated for their hips, which have some nutritional properties, as were their close relatives, the cherries, plums and apples. Most of these early species roses were five-petalled, pink or white with some yellows from China . As civilizations developed trade, accidental crosses of there early species started the evolutionary process as they were grown along side each other.

Mention of roses appeared frequently in the written records of early civilizations, such as those of the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Phoenicians and Romans. In 500 BC, Confucius wrote about the roses growing in the Imperial Rose Garden of the Chinese Emperor, Who also had an extensive library of books about roses. It is from such writings that we can glean a picture of rose distribution and cultivation.

The oldest rose we can identify today is Rosa gallica , which gives very fragrant flowers of deep pink to crimson followed by brick red, sub-globose or turbine hops. The exact geographical origin of R. gallica is unknown, but there are references to it by the Persians in the twelfth century BC; they regarded it as a strong symbol of love and commitment. The next identifiable rose was the very fragrant R. damasccena, which appeared in descriptive texts around 900 BC. In 50 BC a northern African variant called R. damascena semperflorens, the’Autumn Damask’. Captivated the Romans for its ability to give two bloom cycles instead of just one.

Traced back to the fifth century BC, it is believed to have resulted from a cross between R. gallica and T. moschata (the musk rose). Until the discovery and importation of China roses from the Orient in the late eighteenth century, R damascena semperflorens was the only repeat-bloomers known to the Western world.

Another rose of great historical importance was the Alba Rose, ‘White Rose of York’, the emblem of the great House of York during the fifteenth century Wars of the Roses. R. alba is probably a lot older, dating back to as early as the second century AD. In early European times, the evolution of the rose had reached a well-defined, simple family tree, which had five distinctive Old Garden Rose classiciations: Gallica, Alba, Damask, Centifolia and Moss.

The early 1950s was a decisive time in the history of the rose. Gardening for leisure, rather than for food, became increasingly popular, and this coincided with the release of a new rose variety called ‘Peace’. The introduction of roses from the Far East coincided rather neatly with the advent of modern breeding techniques. Although the sexual function of the flower, in particular the function of the anthers and stigma had been revealed in the seventeenth century, this discovery was not used in practical plant breeding for another two hundred years before this time, ‘primitive’ rose breeders would place two distinct varieties in pots together when both were in full bloom; they knew that there was a reasonable chance that the plants would cross-breed and produce seedlings with shared characteristics of the two parents.

In the early part of the nineteenth century, hybridists, primarily French amateurs, began a planned breeding program with very gratifying results. This was quickly followed up with some enthusiasm by rose-growing devotees all around the world. Soon, rose breeding without first planning the parentage became unthinkable.

The subsequent g=progeny produced were identified by groups usually names after their town or country of origin, the hybridist and, in some cases, a wealthy patron. Thus, collective terms such as Bourbons, Noisettes, Hybrid Perpetuals and Portlands came into existence with varying degrees of success. Eventually, the collective term Hybrid Teas was coined; 1867 is the date usually quoted when this modern group became a recognizable entity. Since that time, Hybrid Teas (also known as Large-flowered Roses), have progressed from strength to strength.

Roses have also made a tremendous contribution to the perfume industry.

Roses boast an ancient lineage, and they are intricately entwined in our history and culture.

As a motif, the rose has been and still is depicted in many national emblems. It has been adopted by countless political factions, and even by businesses and several international events.

THE ORIGINS OF CULTIVATED ROSES
Rose’s species have a natural distribution through out most parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Paleontologists inform us that they become established in the Tertiary Period, which began 70 million years ago. This means that the ancestors of the rose predate the evolution of humans

Europe and the Middle East - The Dawn of Rose Breeding

Well before the Christian Era, the transportation of useful plants had played an essential part in the expansion of civilizations. The sprawling Roman Empire together with the excursions of Alexander the Great in Asia introduced many species never seen before in the Middle East and Europe . The dog rose ( Rosa canina), for example, was long thought to be a native of Britain , but was in fact brought there by the Romans.

By about AD 1200 the first five groups of domesticated roses had already begun to evolve in cultivation: Albas, Centifolias, Damasks, Gallicas and Scots Roses.

The Far East - the Birthplace of the Modern Garden Rose

Although rose growing enjoured high popularity in the gardens of Europe for many hundreds of years, it was not until the end of the eighteenth century, with the discovery of R. chinensis in China , that a major step forward was achieved. The revolutionary characteristic of this rose is its ability to flower repeatedly from early summer to late autumn.

Some commentators have used the term ‘perpetual flowering’ but this can be misinterpreted and used too literally. ‘Parson’s Pink China’, ‘Slater’s Crimson China’’, Hume’s Blush Tea-scented China’ and Parks’ Yellow Tea-scented China’ – the first cultivated varieties – opened up a new vista of roses with a modern classical shape, a true crimson color with a very pale hint of the early yellows and a repeat –flowering performance. The Far East became the birthplace of the Modern Garden Rose, and the rest is history.
